I worked at BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Relatively mature IT Service Management program with very few Major Incidents occurring within a very distributed environment.

    Cons

Limited opportunities for advancement. There is not always an expectation that employees understand the underlying concepts of their roles - very task based. They pay like a company that knows they are the largest employer in the state - take it or leave it.

    Advice to Management

Develop mechanisms to allow employees to move about, cross-train and develop skills tangential to core functions.

I have been working at BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

BlueCross BlueShield of SC does an excellent job of recognizing talent and providing opportunities throughout the company. There are entry points through the Entry Level Training Program for new IT personnel. If you are a career long IT person, you can also get a lot of soft skill training here. If you've got that in the bag, this employer is dedicated to your professional development and can help you there.

They are very committed to being a community business and encourage their employees to donate to the United Way and Red Cross often.

    Cons

Sometimes the message can be inconsistent between areas and all the positives noted above do not get spread from area to area. Because a lot of these opportunities take work by management as well as employees, some managers choose to ignore or discourage them. This can be addressed and should be, by the employees.

    Pros

Its a well known company that gives a lot of insight to the healthcare industry. Its a great look on your resume when applying for jobs!

    Cons

Internally the atmosphere is political. The departments can ask for assistant of other employees due to shortage in their department. Basically, what you were hired for; your job can turn into something different.

    Advice to Management

Stay clear of politics and do your job!

    Pros

Great job! No complaints here ... great programs and training... they prepare you

    Cons

I would like more opportunities to work remotely... security comes first ( which is great ) ... that makes it harder to do so

    Advice to Management

Great job ... Some can unintentionally be overlooked ... It is important to stretch the little guys as well so they may learn

They have great benefits and incentive programs. They are an equal opportunity employer. They have long time employees and the pay is good.

    Cons

They do work with contracts and if the contracts and if a contract is lost then your job may be in jeopardy.

    Advice to Management

Take care of your long time employees. Let them know they are appreciated. Letters of recommendation are very much appreciated.

    Pros

Great when you have the right boss. Lots of different areas of the company to explore. Great benefits and good co-workers.

    Cons

Nightmare when you don't. If you work for someone who doesn't know what they are doing, it's nearly impossible to get any relief.

    Advice to Management

Put people in charge who either know the area they manage or that will get out of the way of the workers who do.
