I worked at BlueMountain Capital Management full-time

    Pros

CEO and upper management are just as engaged with employees as the business. Lots of programs, support and career advancement opportunities. Lots of free snacks.

    Cons

Wanted to give 4 stars but: Certain teams have very high turn over due to personality issues/drama. HR, not surprisingly, always sides with company and often inacurrately summarizes your discussions.

    Advice to Management

HR should be less afraid of stepping on senior management toes and be more direct and blunt relaying employee feedback.

I worked at BlueMountain Capital Management full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Beautiful office space. Two fully stocked pantries with healthy options. Productive facilities, help desk and HR teams that contribute to an easy working environment. Access to the brightest in the industry ( if you can track them down). Blue Mountain does sponsor ad-hoc independent development like the CFA.

    Cons

No diversity and inclusion in place. No career development. Heavy intake of friends, family, and alumni from senior staff. There is an elitist culture within the FO that trickle down. Negative /hostile work culture within the female staff.

    Advice to Management

More lunch and learns. More office gatherings. More diversity within the hiring process. More promoting and inclusion from within. Utilize administrative staff to their desired potential with research projects. There seems to be an unbalanced dynamic of extremely busy senior staff and driven thirsty-to-do more junior staff. Congratulate excellent work with recognizable work.

I worked at BlueMountain Capital Management full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great location, decent benefits [401k, health, gym, corporate discounts, stocked pantry, maternity leave], smart people, fast paced work environment.

    Cons

Compensation is below the street average, bonus pools are significantly small for majority of employees and aren't based on performance and/or PnL [it's all about corporate politics]. Work environment is hostile and depressing - everyone is out to get you, and no one is willing to take responsibility when things go wrong. Poor management, managers do not know how to successfully manage and motivate their staff. Management...

    Advice to Management

All senior managers should be laid-off, and management completely restructured. The current management is toxic, manipulative, and non transparent - a quick google search will reveal majority of top employees moving to rival firms. Great firm, but poorly managed.

I worked at BlueMountain Capital Management full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Brilliant People, Amazing Senior Management Team. Quality of Talent is high. Great best practices training in Financial Services. Evolving Industry. Flat organization.

    Cons

Upward mobility can be limited but only in terms of title just because its a small company. Thats only real downside. Its a great place to learn. Can be very demanding depending on your group, but generally the people there are sharp so it can take a lot of work to keep up with everyone else.

    Advice to Management

Encourage more cross collaboration between groups for innovation in processes.

    No opinion of CEO

I worked at BlueMountain Capital Management full-time

    Pros

Generous benefits for new parents, fully paid health insurance, free snacks/drinks, good location/decent office space

    Cons

Over the past 2 years, the culture got significantly more clique-ish - and it greatly affects your day to day, with managers giving plum assignments and over-sized compensation to the most overtly sycophantic individuals. Not many good or well-engaged managers. Lots of back-biting and sniping, within and across teams. Management has been very fickle about the direction of the business. As said in other reviews, a...

I have been working at BlueMountain Capital Management full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Compensation is generous, a good amount of vacation time is granted, and Insurance is fully payed for by the company. For most department's work-life balance is good, Operations and Accounting work too many hours, as is always the case. Many nice people, with a below average number of finance dbags. I believe the firm acts responsibly on the behalf of our investors.

    Cons

The firm has become opaque and cliquish over time, though it is espoused to be an open, transparent, and inclusive environment. Senior Management leads the way for this behavior. In a firm of less than 300 there is no good reason for the amount of separation which exists. All levels of management need to stop using the word transparent, the firm is not. Too often resumes are dismissed because the candidates do not...

    Advice to Management

Disseminate information about the state the company and some amount of information about changes being made in the environment. When benefits and employees are removed, and there is nothing from management on the subject, everyone speculates and paranoia builds. Everyone can see the PnL, good or bad, so just share a little of what you are thinking. This cannot be relegated to the polished presentation at the quarterly...
