I worked at Bluestem Brands full-time

    Pros

You can get involved in a wide variety of work and really make an impact / see the effects of your work

Most of the individual contributors in my department were friendly and easy to work with

The middle management can be fantastic

They use a lot of different software / platforms so you can get exposed to a wide variety of Business Intelligence tools

    Cons

The reward for a job well done is more work - not higher pay
    Hard to advance
    Priorities shift frequently
    Knuckleheads persists
The integration is a frustrating process and some would-be tyrants rage against their loss of influence and try to demonstrate their importance by slowing things down

'Transparent pay' is a complete sham - HR guards salary bands and managers refuse to address compensation unless you threaten to leave. and frankly if you have a better offer, why stay? Threatening to leave is tantamount to crossing the rubicon at bluestem and a good way to get on the chopping block.

Flexible work / casual environment isn't all it's cracked up to be. You can't wear shorts and sandals (if you're a man) and flexible work isn't really something you can count on using.

Inconsistent rules - some groups would drink beer in the office but getting drinks at lunch would be frowned upon in other groups. The kicker was that HR brought kegs into the office once upon a time.

    Advice to Management

Make sure the job is compelling for employees - high performers have options and don't have to play games.

Put the house in order starting with I.T

Spend more time making sure people are doing the right things rather than doing things right.

    Pros

Flexible and generous time off, great people.

    Cons

Senior management has lost their way. Once a company on the rise, now new president and board are running it into the ground. Company grew too fast, moved into a new building and incurred way too much debt. New business strategies are a disaster, got away from what they did very well. HUGE assortment growth was a joke which had the entire team taking their hands off of the core business and customers needs. Vwery sad to see!

    Advice to Management

Fire the president and his top executives. Put the control in the hands of the people who have been there since the beginning. Get rid of the "Target" people too. Way too many egos there now.

    Pros

Great people - everyone was friendly and wanted the team to be successful

    Cons

No clear direction - company is downsizing but the team doesn't fully understand why

    Advice to Management

Tell the team whats going on, and how they can help fix it. Continuing to cut leads to fear.

    Pros

It is the co-workers that make my job tolerable. The flex work schedule is terrific.

    Cons

The business model is out dated. You cannot keep slicing the data and narrowing the potential credit card holders to a couple of notches above sub-prime. If selling product is really your business then reduce the product premium charges. These charges are actually paying for those who default on their credit card payments. Less premium will mean more people will want to repay and not default.

    Advice to Management

Do you make make more selling product or do you make more money selling your bad debt? Change your business model, don't try creative untested programs. Your business model is outdated and will continue to lead to the ultimate and predictable demise of the company. Start think of selling off brands dismantling now to get the most shareholder benefit.

I worked at Bluestem Brands full-time

    Pros

The new location is nicer than the old one
The interview process was quick and painless (though the description of my position and what the position turned out to be were not the same)

    Cons

    Micromanagement
    Red tape everywhere
    No culture to be seen
    Poorly structured
Sub par benefits/pay compared to similar companies in the area
    Very little collaboration
Employees driven by fear of losing their positions and the executive leadership team (old boys' club)
Employees spend 5% of the time on the first 95% of the project, and 95% of the time of the final 5% of the project
No room or opportunities for movement or advancement
Frequent passing around of menial tasks
    An extremely hierarchical organizational structure
A lot of talk behind other employees backs
A constant feeling of fear and unease on the ground floor
Credit is given to the higher ups, while blame is allocated to those further down the chain

My superior told me in the first few weeks at Bluestem that he/she thought (and the executive in charge of my department thought) I made too much money for my position, so I should stay in line.

    Advice to Management

Research who is running your departments and if they're the right people for the job, how your departments can be run to improve the quality of work, and what can be done to utilize employees more effectively

I have been working at Bluestem Brands full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Culture used to be the best thing: flexible, family orientated, casual dress, half day Friday's in summer, company picnics/holiday parties, food trucks, yoga, gym, and good 401K matching.

    Cons

Flexibility got taken away. They will tell you they offer it, but what the new definition is, is what you would expect at any company, not one that says they stand behind flexibility, Not a lot of career advancement. The CEO once said that if you are looking for more money, get promoted or leave. One could almost look past the career advancement with the flexibility, but with that gone and no career advancement, not a lot to of reasons to keep the good talent around.

    Advice to Management

Give back flexible work arrangements as fast as you can say it. This was a crucial part of keeping the young talent motivated and happy to work here. Small compensation packages go A LONG way.

    Pros

PTO was the only good thing they offered, and some co-workers were friendly, but BSB did not know how to address internal issues with bad employees.

    Cons

co-worker was a bully and got away with it. HR would just talk to the person and basically hand slap the person. But this was a constant battle. Pay sucked and was at the bottom pay scale.

    Advice to Management

For all employers who turn a blind eye. Wake up. Get rid of the bullies. compensate your good employees and reward them!

    Pros

I was impressed with the 'C' level including CEO, COO, and CIO. I'd follow them into any battle. Over time they may be able to right the ship, if they can get the right talent to work with them.

    Cons

Friends in the IT industry warned me that Bluestem chews good people up and spits them out, but I did not listen. What others here say about the culture is spot-on. Departments do not play nicely with each other, and it takes a lot of consensus building to get anything done. Even with the move to agile you'd think there'd be a big kumbaya moment, but there wasn't. The agile transformation was rushed and understaffed. The culture change was attempted, but not really supported by the senior IT leaders that have been there for many, many years and are either unwilling or unable to change. New people from the outside with new ideas are easily dismissed.

    Advice to Management

CIO -- build a culture of trust, and hold skip-level meetings. Get a good grip on your team's leadership skills. I think you'll be surprised.
