I have been working at Bluestem Brands full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Medium size company so easier access to leadership if and when needed. Very data driven and constant desire to test and learn. Constantly innovating so never a shortage of new and exciting work. Still feel there is a good balance between work and home life.

    Cons

Challenging retail environment - no different than most other retailers (Target, BestBuy, etc.) are faced with. Have the advantage of not having retail stores but nonetheless face similar challenges.

    Advice to Management

Need executive leadership to support Integration efforts - change is never easy but sometimes necessary. Open Senior executive roles isn't a good excuse to send conflicting messages.

I worked at Bluestem Brands full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The best things in my experience were the half-day Fridays and the handful of really smart people I was able to work with.

    Cons

This company makes money by targeting people with poor credit scores, extending them lines of credit, and then gouging them on product pricing. They have to charge these high prices because the default rate on their credit products are so high. So many of their customers are worse off for having come into contact with Bluestem. It is really hard to feel good about the work you do when you know your professional success is directly related to someone else's plight. It's alarming how many people there choose to turn a blind eye to this fact. If you have any morale compass whatsoever you should stay away.

    Pros

From a technology aspect, the world of Bluestem Brands is exciting. There are lots of challenges and opportunities to build new things. The company is small enough where you can make a real impact while still dealing with customers and orders at scale.

Bluestem still has a great vacation policy, bonuses paid out quarterly, and summer hours.

    Cons

It was a rough beginning to this year with a reduction in force and adjustments to the business. It took some time, but we really feel we are now trending upward and have positive results from the business changes.

I worked at Bluestem Brands full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Bluestem Brands bought our Brand at Draper's & Damon's with encouraging visions of expansion and profitability saying we had a mature customer niche that currently is not serviced anywhere else and they wanted to expand.

    Cons

Bluestem Brands did not understand our customer they purchased and had too high of expectations for this mature customer. It's unfortunate that they closed all stores based on this as the customer was ours for 90 years and would still be there today. About 250 lost jobs.

    Advice to Management

Better research and development needed to understand your customer you are purchasing and listen to the people who tried to tell you what you needed to do.

    Pros

Good mid level mgrs, 1-3 positive execs...but seems we have one leave per week. those who built the company(execs) are all leaving while the CEO has taken good sales gains of 2-3 years ago has run the place into the ground. Time for a new coach.

    Cons

Poor or no articulable vision, weak CEO, employees fast becoming disengaged! Board who owns this place sleeping at the switch?

    Advice to Management

Get a new leader (s) or find someone who can develop and articulate what our future is. Are you a credit co. Or a sales co?
