I worked at Bluffton University part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The supervisors I had were generally nice - I held several positions during my time here as a student worker. It's a pretty laid back and friendly environment

    Cons

The whole student-worker system just does not work very well for one main reason: they never fire anyone. Now it's not entirely their fault because they have to make jobs available to students. But still. It breeds laziness and ineptitude among student workers and many people just don't do their jobs.

    Advice to Management

I know that you have a responsibility to provide jobs for students as part of a work-scholarship... but the managers need to be willing to step up and fire people who aren't doing their job. Give them a lesson about what it's like to have a job in the real world. Then maybe they'll care.

    Pros

Many very good people. Management is fiscally conservative. This leads to our current "stable" financial status when many peers are struggling. Employees overall are not mean or "backstabbing". Tuition waiver for undergraduate classes.

    Cons

Management avoids difficult decisions at times. Bad employees are not removed. This affects overall morale. In fact, morale is fairly low in most areas on campus. In addition, while the fiscally conservative model keeps the university in business, this also means few, if any, raises. Pay is also not tied to performance. Lastly, the staffing is not sufficient to do a good job. Too much work and too few people.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the people you hired. If there is a complaint, listen and respond. If you can't trust or depend on an employee, show them the door and find someone who can do the work. Moral suffers when obvious problems are not addressed.
