I worked at Bona Vista as an intern

    Pros

Learned a lot of things pertaining to clinical office work.

    Cons

It is a slow paced working environment.

I have been working at Bona Vista full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The consumers are the most loving and non judgmental persons. The attention that you give them help them to grow, which makes them feel loved and wanted.

    Cons

After almost 14 years of employment, I'm capped at $10.64/hour. Employees are shown very little appreciation from management.

    Advice to Management

    Do the grunt work.

I worked at Bona Vista full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

You feel good about helping certain people. That is the only semi descent part of the job.

    Cons

They pay $7 an hour while training, then you go to MAYBE $9 and they expect you to clean up human feces, work with child molesters, sit in disgusting homes, drive to surrounding cities AND nobody cares if you know what you're doing. Office managers don't communicate and are extremely unorganized. It was an absolute joke. I quit on good terms because I'm a professional, but my 10 year old daughter could manage that place better than those people. Don't waste your time.

    Advice to Management

Do your job instead of sit on your butts doing nothing. Pay your employees enough to live. Get rid of all the people you KNOW are unregistered child molesters. Communicate with your employees whom you only pay 8/9 an hour.

    Pros

Upward mobility, and opportunities to grow. Caregivers have the ability to move up to Team Lead positions, House Managers and higher if they are dedicated. Great place if you want to make a difference in the lives of others! Our children and adults are the best!

    Cons

Can be stressful, but good can be found in every day.

I worked at Bona Vista full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great mission, does a lot of good in the community and for adults and children with developmental disabilities

    Cons

If male you will NOT get an upper level management job despite whatever your qualifications are. Worked in Administration for over 5 years and saw men come and go, but women in upper level positions stayed for years. One time I tried to gain an upper level position was flat out told they didn't have the money, the next week, a woman was promoted to a VP position...CEO makes six figures in a non-profit company...pitiful...if management cannot make a decent living, then neither should the CEO

    Advice to Management

Time for a change of CEO and all upper level positions...

    No opinion of CEO

I have been working at Bona Vista full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

You love helping the people you take care of. You start to feel as if they are your own family because to see them more than your own family.

    Cons

Extremely low pay for what they want you to do. They expect you to work 55-65 hours a week and be fine with it. Not recommended for someone with kids and a family because you never see them. When you tell management about the scheduling issue they always say we're working on it but they never actually work on it.

    Advice to Management

Be considerate of your employees. You work the 8-4:30 M-F you get to see your family no one wants to work 62 hours and not even be able to enjoy a dinner with their family once a week.

    "Great Mission, Lousy Management"

I worked at Bona Vista (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The impact that you are able to make in the lives of the kids and clients is simply amazing and is the biggest Pro.
The majority of staff are good and caring people who take their responsibilities to the people they serve seriously and to heart.
If you are fortunate enough to meet the hours qualification the benefits are very good.
Never a dull moment or two days the same.

    Cons

Biggest Con, ( Capitalization intentional), is the CEO. If it is not about her or you disagree then you are shown the door. This includes the members of the board too.

Company politics and the tension caused by them are palpable when she is not happy. Many positions have been created for a specific person only for that person to be put aside when the usefulness or influence they were hired for is used or wains.

A married client couple were selected to receive a Habitat For Humanity home. The negotiations of the details nearly killed the opportunity for this couple. The CEO was insisting the the home be given to Bona Vista and not the couple, but they could live there. When told that that was not going to happen a tantrum ensued from the Administration offices. It was finally agreed that Bona Vista would be offered first right of purchase if it was ever sold.

Do not get on CEOs bad side as she will find a reason to dismiss you even if it is created from whole cloth.

    Advice to Management

Please find a way to replace CEO she is dynamic and get things done but the cost of lives of lower management and staff is NOT worth her getting the credit for what others do.

Get to go out a lot, get to enjoy the handicap

    Cons

Don't get paid enough to drive out of town all the time

    Advice to Management

Pay employees better so the ones that enjoy their job would stay.

I worked at Bona Vista full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Love helping others and the population. Coworkers are overall friendly. Great to try to get your ideas out there to better the system and programs within that field.

    Cons

Management is extremely unprofessional and plays favorites with many staff. No room for growth. Long hours (50-60 hours a week, sometimes back to back 16 hour shifts) with minimum compensation and no gratitude from management.

    Advice to Management

Talk WITH the staff instead of AT staff. Show more appreciation toward the hardworking, hands on staff. Offer better compensation and room for growth to employees that deserve it.

I worked at Bona Vista part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

They do a lot of State required training annually to keep employees up to date and fresh in the best ways to serve the consumers who use the Bona Vista Industries programs.

    Cons

They never give raises. Unfortunately, they don't show appreciation to hard work and dedication in the form of a raise. And a lot of the positions they hire for require a lot of hands on direct support for the consumers/residents, which are stressful positions.

    Advice to Management

Learn to show more appreciation from the TOP of the Senior management chain downward.
