Former Employee - Customer Assistant in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales

I worked at Boots full-time for more than a year

    Pros

A fair employer - no serious complaints

    Cons

Pay seems low, when considering the variety of tasks you must undertake - your tasks will extend beyond the shop floor and can include demanding manual tasks, such as in the stock room

    Pros

    Cons

Area Managers taking control of 30 stores is a joke. Senior management have adopted american values of ridiculous workload, absolutely cutting down on staff numbers and extremely high expectation (Walgreens merger was a . With new loss of areas and reduced regions, a lot of great staff left and the ones that remained expect a ridiculous amount from their store managers.. Area managers extremely patronising and need to show compassion to their store managers as without them, they would not have a job and be achieving the targets that is expected of them by their managers. Support staff, show compassion to new staff. Don't throw your new managers into a hell hole without a clue in the world on how to do their jobs and then be advocates for 'mental health'. New area cuts, region cuts and tripling the number of stores that area managers have taken on means even less support for stores, for me this inevitably starts the beginning of the end no matter how delusional senior managers believe that this new model is a pinnacle of maximising profit. Running on fumes constantly and then getting told off for not getting jobs done. Massive focus on brand standards but many smaller stores look like they've been hit by tornadoes because there simply isn't enough staff to get the jobs done in a day. A million and one tasks sent by head office without a care in the world as to how much work Managers already need to do on that day. In essence, if you want unrealistic targets to have even a remote chance of being achieved, you need to provide your managers with support and staff. Brand standards and 10 billion audits can't be done if you expect a store manager to do all retail and operations, dispense, and run the Pharmacy as one person. Yes planning and being efficient is critical but that is only possible with resources.

I have been working at Boots part-time for more than a year

    Pros

    Double discount is good

    Cons

Far too many responsibilities put on base level employees. Shop left without a manager for 2 and a half months over the busy Christmas period. Area manager could not be less interested in the problems caused. Tried to contact payroll and they refused to speak to me, will only deal with managers. Holidays refused throughout December and January, no prior warning given. Constant lock ups put on shop floor staff without asking. One member of staff left alone regularly despite lots of theft. Truly the worst retail experience I have ever had.
