works at

Booz Allen Hamilton

Any tips on dealing with a manager who never respond to emails or meeting invites ? For some context, at Booz Allen, everyone is assigned a "career manager". They are responsible for helping you to build a network, find new opportunities, and answer admin related questions. My current career manager does not respond at all.

Great place to work - with some drawbacks

    Mar 15, 2010 -  in London, England
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

    - Some seriously strong colleagues supercharge personal development - Professional, hardworking, smart, diverse - Minimal hierarchy - Lacks drinking culture of some of its competitors, whilst maintaining sociability - Ability to influence your own staffing

    Cons

    - Dealt with the recession very badly: poor communication, hiring & then firing joiners, poor morale - Client book could be stronger - Progression can be a little too restrictive

Great experience, but too many badly managed changes in recent years

Jun 17, 2011 - Associate in London, England
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

    - Very talented and sharp people - Supportive network among colleagues - Little hierarchy - Variety of high profile engagements providing great exposure internationally - Great place if you enjoy travelling

    Cons

    - Too many changes in recent years since the break up from Booz Allen Hamilton (and before as a matter of fact) - Little direction from management - Bad communication / change procedures leading very mixed messages - Long hours and too much travel - Training unstructured - should be outsourced to professionals - Appraisal process needs reviewing as it does not consider between trade off between bill-ability and following up on development actions

Interesting Global Projects but Stifles Creativity and Lacks Assertiveness in Providing Solutions

Nov 14, 2012 - Lead Associate in Beirut

    Business Outlook

    Pros

High quality global clients and at times very interesting projects Early Exposure to executive clients teams International travel Can be very satisfying if click with a 'suitable' practice Colleagues make all the difference & are very collaborative; did not find it to be highly competitive Very good to high salary & many perks (laundry allowance, five star hotels and more) Highly transparent in salary & bonus and very efficient in settling expenses Enables internal networking; good for independent individuals

    Cons

Poor work life balance Too structured and heavy on frameworks, not enough whiteboard brainstorming Poor integration of advanced degree holders (PhD, MD, JD) Very slow professional advancement schedule in some parts (i.e., Middle East) Mixed quality of middle management

Booz Middle East is a good place if you are Lebanese, but will serve anybody well to a point.

    Feb 13, 2011 - Senior Associate SA1
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Good environment for learning and acquiring marketable skills, as long as you have professional experience from outside consulting to complement this somewhat academic exposure. Great reputation among employers across the Middle East. Some of the leaders are of outstanding caliber. This is a very good place for learning, growing, and preparing yourself for other things.

    Cons

Your colleagues are smart but typically inexperienced and often a bit too full of themselves. Some are outright rude, if being civil does not serve them any other purpose. Intellectual capital is sophisticated, diversified, and widely applicable, but sometime a bit academic. If running companies is your objective, there are several areas for which you have to pick up learnings elsewhere.

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Booz & Company , now known as Strategy&, was a great place to work. Really smart colleagues, challenging work and fun!

    Cons

Company is changing due to merger with PwC. The open question is whether the company will remain a premier consulting firm, or become just another big 4 advisory business.

    exciting place to be!

    Dec 11, 2010 - Consultant
    Recommend

    Business Outlook

    Pros

    - Highly interesting questions at large clients - Very bright colleagues - Compensation in line with McK - Very generous sponsorship package to b-school - General sense of excitement and desire for improvement at Booz, we truly are a '2 year old start up' -- we have the stability of a 90 year old company's CEO relationships with an entrepreneurial feel not seen at our competitors, its highly unique

    Cons

    - While some significant effort has been put towards knowledge sharing, it still doesn't culturally pervade the organization. I really believe it will, but until it does, lets keep working on it. - We can be less risk averse in promoting people to partner. Our competitors are a bit faster than us here despite our generally nimbler feel. Probably best to fix this.
