Pros
Great team spirit amongst the staff regionally and globally. Lots of learning and growth opportunities. Strong leadership and reputation in the region.
Cons
Work life balance not a priority. Not a sustainable environment for a long term career. Little being done at the firm to alleviate this consistent concern.

Pros
Good knowledge in other offices
Cons
Poor leadership skills in China

Great exposure, development, and experience - if you're working with the right people
Jun 23, 2011 - in New York, NYRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
- strong and visionary senior leadership team - opportunity to work on challenging and high impact client problems - down to earth staff with 'roll up sleeves' style - practice structure allows those who want to specialize an opportunity to work in area of interest - good work-life programs (eg, sabbaticals, diversity networks) - fair compensation
Cons
- Passive aggressive culture with limited direct feedback - Virtually no formal training, and apprenticeship / on-the-job training breaks down at higher levels - recent short term local decisions call into question what the firm values - limited administrative support and general resources and poor knowledge mgmt mean that staff carry a burden that further reduces work / life balance

Pros
- In the right pockets, competes with the very best management consulting firms (energy, health come to mind, but highly region-dependent) - Entrepreneurial, if you are adept at cutting through red tape or getting what you want - Senior leaders looking for ideas from junior ranks for "how to make it better" - Trying to take our own medicine - global brand; even if brand still lags mckinsey, bcg, in some regions this is not a huge drop, and in some industries, not a drop at all - willingness and eagerness to improve culture, work-life balance, etc
Cons
- lots of legacy problems from 'old days' of BAH and/or partners and internal staff set in their ways - questionably competent senior/internal leadership decision-making in some regions - brand in the 'real world' is variable; sometimes as strong as anyone, other times 'Ops/analyst wonk' bias - discombobulated strategy; still trying to find its way in terms of market-facing and internal investment, focus after the BAH spin-off - At junior level (e.g. below principal/partner), globality of firm is hardly tangible, not a mobile place - Culture inconsistent, with some champions of change and others who just want to punch a card and make their money, 'stop whining and get to work' - culture of feedback highly inconsistent; 'direct, honest feedback' is rare, you either get negative feedback indirectly and without details, or you get sugar coated nonsense because many people don't know how to deliver constructive criticism and/or are afraid to do it to your face, which is silly

Negative experience as an experienced hire
Jan 12, 2012 - PrincipalRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Good upside if you can bring an account to the firm which generates over $2m / year as an experienced hire (ie Principal level). As long as you maintain a pyramid, your utilization is high and you contribute significantly to revenue and getting others below you chargeable then you will be in good shape.
Cons
Siloed organization in which each partner is his/her own P&L. If you are not part of one of these teams you will not be successful. Too much busywork with poor priorization (eg pursuing proposals that have no chance to win). Industrial approach to consulting (ie re-use of old slides and frameworks). Poor or no market differentiation. Mediocre, non-visionary leadership prevents revenue growth and market expansion. Lack of scale and lack of superior skills (ie statistical analysis, key functional skills like supply chain or CRM). Primary industry focus limited to CPG, Health, Energy and non-US telco.

Typical Consulting Experience
Jul 24, 2015 - Anonymous Employee in Washington, DCRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Namebrand management consulting firms are one of the top reasons to go to business school. You immediately start making good money (even more if you intern and accept a tuition reimbursement), and reset your resume to a higher standard. You can get a lot of experience in a short period of time, and certainly many desirable business and management careers list experience in investment banking or strategy consulting as one of the primary criteria.
Cons
Top consulting firms often attract the gunners you didn't enjoy sitting next to in business school. Often times the least liked managers (i.e., the worst to work for) were exactly the ones who were promoted up the chain. Poor leadership and middle management made an already challenging work-life environment that much worse. Good talent was often disgruntled, and everyone was searching for the next job on the side. Unfortunately, the promise of ' you can do anything from consulting' is not entirely accurate, and the firm's ability and willingness to help place staff on their way out is nearly non-existent.

Outstanding people, friendly culture, interesting projects, limited industry diversity
Nov 8, 2013 - Associate in SydneyRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
People including new grads are top notch - effective no-a--hole policy Everyone jumps in to help at first opportunity, little politics Great learning experience - seniors put effort to help you learn new skills Good exposure to client's senior leadership even for juniors Very robust, may be best in the industry, appraisal process Good collaboration across offices - easy to get good insights from global network
Cons
Limited project diversity - several large scale projects in industry and public sector Seniors make good effort to manage work / life balance, but not always work Leaders not proactive enough in expanding business outside few core industries

Pros
Deep commitment to ideas and to thought leadership overall. Inherent globality in corporate culture and leadership.
Cons
Behind the others in scale. Deep functional capabilities exist, but only in pockets. Some confusion over compensation strategies for Expert staff (I'm told this is being addressed.) Some potential for brand confusion with Booz Allen Hamilton.

Bright people who care and helped me learn

Leadership and direction that led to it being sold
