Booz Allen Hamilton

Any tips on dealing with a manager who never respond to emails or meeting invites ? For some context, at Booz Allen, everyone is assigned a "career manager". They are responsible for helping you to build a network, find new opportunities, and answer admin related questions. My current career manager does not respond at all.

Company deep seeded in business history

Aug 31, 2012 - Senior Consultant in New York, NY

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Booz & Company is a global consulting firm that advises businesses, government ministries (outside the U.S.), and institutions around the world on issues of strategy, organization, operations, transformation and information technology. It holds expertise in a vast range of industries, including aerospace, automotive, chemicals, consumer, energy and utilities, financial services, health, industrials, media and entertainment, oil and gas, retail, transportation and others. Ninety years of consulting results in impressive milestones. Currently the oldest management consulting firm still in business, we have had a hand in the creation of the contract system for Hollywood movies, overseen the merger of the NFL and AFL, and steered the Chrysler Corporation out of bankruptcy. We pioneered the concepts of human capital, product life cycle and supply chain management, all mainstays of business and consulting today. And at the most fundamental level, we originated the term “management consultant”. Our focus on strategy consulting has persisted since 1914, when founder Edwin Booz first began advising clients to help them maintain a competitive advantage.

    Cons

Too low profile at times. Need to improve on bland recognition and improve exit opportunities for current consultants.

Mixed bag -- know what you want and enlist the support of senior players

    Pros

    - Professional growth is excellent - Opportunity to contribute and make a difference

    Cons

    - Too competitive at times for their own good-- at a point there are dimishing returns and people get fed up with it - Punishment orientation vs. praise and teamwork (we know that the later is more effective but still the culture leans towards the negative) - Expert consultants treated differently but work just as hard; not as valued

    Pros

Great team spirit amongst the staff regionally and globally. Lots of learning and growth opportunities. Strong leadership and reputation in the region.

    Cons

Work life balance not a priority. Not a sustainable environment for a long term career. Little being done at the firm to alleviate this consistent concern.

Overall, Booz & Company is a great place to work and learn.

Sep 29, 2008 - Associate in New York, NY

    Business Outlook

    Pros

There are great opportunities to learn about an industry by working across a range of companies. You're able to work with some incredibly smart people on incredibly challenging business problems to really make an impact on clients. The apprenticeship model supports constance learning and growth in analystical skills, thought leadership, communication skills, and effective teamwork.

    Cons

Travelling four days a week can be difficult on one's personal life. In addition, the firm's industries of focus don't necessarily meet all individuals' interests.

    Choose your own adventure

Nov 20, 2013 - Consultant II in New York, NY

    Business Outlook

    Pros

People are smart, humble, generally kind, and very hardworking. There are lots of opportunities for you if you take the initiative and are very proactive in seeking out projects and connections at the firm. Younger members of the team are often allowed to take on exception amount of responsibility.

    Cons

Sometimes the chain of command is too loosely structured and people at all levels are lost scratching their heads (esp. on a project with weak partners). "Up or on" system does not select for good leadership -- it selects for hard workers and crowd pleasers.

    Business Outlook

    Pros

    - Many opportunities for junior to gain experience - Certain practices are global: opportunity to travel internationally - Very strong in Oil&Gas and in the Middle East - Some offices have great working atmosphere and are not competitive

    Cons

    - Lack of high profile clients - Some projects have only marginal impact on clients - Competition from big 3 is very hard in small geographies - Outplacement is not strong
