I worked at Borders full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Wonderful atmosphere and culture, friendly and caring staff, employees were happy from the store level to distribution centers to the corporate office - no matter what role you had or job title.

    Cons

Several years before Borders closed, it was very stressful with large lay-offs every year, but most people loved working there so much that they stayed. Bad management decisions, too much micromanaging going on. Employees were expected to fill the roles of many others instead of hiring more staff.

    Advice to Management

Micromanaging does not help employees do their jobs well, allowing employees to be empowered produces better results, as does helping employees succeed and move up in the company.
