I worked at Bose full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

There is an incredible design team at Bose. They continue to push each other to create better products and better experiences for the consumers. Great financial benefits and a great understanding of work life balance. Short on vacation days, though you do get a good amount of sick and personal time on top of vacation.

    Cons

There really isn't too much to complain about. They are a bit behind on vacation time, starting at 10 days and adding one day a year.

    Advice to Management

I believe management should work hard to help mentor and understand the career goals of the younger designers. The younger staff is often times left to fend for themselves when a mentor would help them develop quicker with potentially fewer mistakes.

    Pros

    smart and amazing people.
    intersting projects
    good work environment
small city... slightly less expenisve than boston.. but generally more expensive than the rest of the US
nice socials to meet and understand other people and their projects...
freedom to work anywhere anytime anyhow...
freedom to choose the kind of work you want to do
ever changing workforce and work tasks... so new people working wiht you on differnt projects every 8 months...
    motivated management
in depth research available... soo college like enviornment with a team dedicated to research in a narrow field with loads of research funding and loose time limits

    Cons

most people there are smarter than you.. so could develop an inferiority complex....
no housing help in a small city with veyr few(and expensive) appartments
people who cant cope with change will have a tough time adjusting to the ever changing and reorganizing work force(as the case with any big company)

    Advice to Management

give the first week as a slow introduction ot the new employees...
let engineers be engineers... not data feeders or updating windchill or SAP pages...

    Pros

As a privately held company, we get to work on really interesting long term projects that a publicly traded company couldn't do. Also if you have a good idea, people will listen if you make a good case for it.

    Cons

The vacation time per year could be better and how you accrue over the years needs to be improved. Also there is a parking shortage at the headquarters, which necessitates taking a shuttle several months per year.

    Advice to Management

Keep and continue to improve the current communication channels from the top to the rank and file.

  4. "Bose is a very stable, slow moving company with strong engineering talent and a lot of opportunity."

    Pros

Bose has a strong concentration of very smart, motivated engineers, and there is tremendous support for professional development within the company. It is very satisfying to work on consumer products that people love. Bose has a culture of strong shared values that runs very deep, and although sometimes it seems like people are "drinking the kool-aid", the values are actually genuine at the highest levels of management. In most of the company, work/life balance is valued and supported (this is not true in the automotive division).

    Cons

The lack of adequate parking is a surprisingly big problem. Leadership in new product planning is very weak. The cafeteria is terrible.

    Advice to Management

Inject some imagination into the New Product Planning group.

    Pros

People, Products, Everything... TOP TIER Customer Service and the 1.5 hour commute i made was worth it.

    Cons

Hiring freeze, minimal employment opportunities and must be a temp first, usually. Commute.

    Advice to Management

Dont forget the people who made sacrifices, complete shift changes/lifestyle, only to see many ( and understandably so) let go due to the Recess/Depression.

    Pros

This is a terrific place to work. The place is loaded with very competent degreed engineers from world renowned institutions. Bob Maresca is one of the most down to earth, honest leaders that you will ever encounter. The benefits are great and the pension is excellent. What I like best about the company is that their value system is aligned with mine. Great products and a company that isn’t a slave to Wall Street that plays for the long run. If you work there you are very fortunate.

    Cons

Long hours and hard work. If you don't want to work, find another comapny.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the great work. Continue to talk to your team.

private company without the public company learning aspects
    can't have food at desks

    Advice to Management

invest in more current financial tools
    diversify product offering
partner with lower end auto companies for auto division
    need wireless noise-cancellation head phones

The atmostphere at Bose is fantastic. Everybody is happy to be there and proud of the products that they are selling. They have a true "open-door" policy that makes it every easy to communicate with management.

    Cons

Being a reasonably large corporation, Bose does struggle with the limitations of some larger companies. There is a lot of red tape to get through for significant changes to occur. Their approach to creating audio products is not to be a lead innovator, but rather to see how the market responds to new technology, and then to refine that technology and incorporate it after it has been successful for awhile.

    Advice to Management

I truly enjoyed my tenure at Bose and would love to work there again at any point in the future. I have highly recommended Bose to everyone that ha asked.
