I worked at Boston Children's Hospital full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Supportive environment, hospital monetary incentives, positive environment, advanced from level I to IV within my time there as well as learned new skills

    Cons

The only con for me was the commute in/out of Boston

    Advice to Management

None. Now that there is a satellite closer to where I live I would love to regain employment

So many benefits! Tuition reimbursement, 1/2 off T passes, Movie tickets, little things that make this place great. People are nice too.

    Cons

Honestly not too many except there isnt much communication between departments, but that doesnt stop you from reaching out.

    Pros

    - Good people
    - Great Supervisor
    - Powerful Systems
    - Here, you are going to help people to have a better life! That's what I want for my life.

    Cons

The salary for the interns is really low. It's not comparable with other giant companies like Google or Facebook.

    Advice to Management

My direct supervisor is a wonderful man. I hope you follow what you are doing now.

I have been working at Boston Children's Hospital full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Very smart and dedicated PIs, postdocs and technicians

    Cons

Boston Children's Hospital treats employees as monolith, so researchers who will never be involved with patients (and aren't even in the same building!) wind up wasting time on meetings/trainings that are meant for clinicians and hospital staff (e.g. proper record keeping, patient confidentiality, etc.)

    Advice to Management

Realize that you have a large group of researchers that are not at all involved in patient care and so do not have the same working environment/requirements/day-to-day events as your hospital staff.

    Pros

sense of mission, intellectually stimulating, opportunity to move around within the institution, employee engagement, chance to feel like you are making a difference

    Cons

long hours, multiple competing priorities - teaching, research, patient care; constant preparation for regulatory reviews

    Advice to Management

take every opportunity to appreciate and recognize employees; continue programs to enhance work/life balance

I have been working at Boston Children's Hospital full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Boston Children's Hospital does amazing work for their patients and families. I have been very proud to work there because of what they do. The department I work in now, has the best atmosphere and really values their employees. The hospital encourages and supports use of the benefits they offer, which is many.

    Cons

I've worked in a few different departments and it really depends on your manager whether you like your job or not. A year ago I would have gave a 2 star rating because I worked on a unit with really unprofessional people who did not uphold the hospital wide standard. There are no work from home opportunities. In this day and age to schedule appointments, and working in a call center position, you should be able to have at least some opportunities to work from home. Also while the BCH has great benefits, the pay is just not competitive. People in a variety of roles complain and eventually leave because of pay.

    Advice to Management

The hospital makes so much money, it should be more up to par with salary compared to other area hospitals. Require more education and training of people who work with families in regards to customer service, or front end staff. Technology is growing, keep up and give people work from home options if qualified. Bring back bonuses, that would be nice :)
