    I worked at Boston Children's Hospital (More than a year)

    Pros

    Incredible mission, 75% of people were really great people to work with, good benefits,

    Cons

    Combative, Defensive, Unprofessional, Manipulative -- Senior leadership in the Marketing department really struggles to create an environment that is productive and motivating. The wrong people are rewarded and aggressive, immature and unprofessional behavior will continue to exist until HR steps in to change this. It is unfortunate because there are some really smart and passionate people in the mid-management and junior levels, but they will continue to leave as long as this culture remains as is. I would never recommend this place to anyone who does not want to spend half their days arguing or defending their expertise.

    Advice to Management

    Take action to make this department less political and less combative. Be more clear with what expectations are and allow people to make some decisions without having to constantly defend work, especially when it is subjective.

    I worked at Boston Children's Hospital (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    It's all about the Children. Dedicated staff and rewarding work.

    Cons

    HR doesn't return calls. I recommended a friend for a job, they interviewed, and never heard anything. He called HR to inquire about the status of the job, and they never gave him the courtesy of a call back. I was embarrassed to work for a company that was so thoughtless. What does that say to people??

    Advice to Management

    Need to follow up with candidates.

    I worked at Boston Children's Hospital full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    * Great mission
    * Good location
    * Huge help with commuter services
    * Prestigious until you look under the hood.

    Cons

    * Huge egos - don't disagree with managers or you'll be in the dog house.
    * Very poor communication within and between departments.
    * Lots of politics.
    * Personal feelings get in the way of getting the job done.

    Advice to Management

    It's good that executive management understands the old way of command & control management is hurting them, but pulling this old institution into a 21st century mindset is going to be an uphill battle. Please communicate the "new way" to all levels of management, because the upper-level managers are not pushing the new values to mid-level managers. I had to leave because pointing out the problems that I saw and attempting to fix them was seen as a personal insult instead of a help to the organization.

    I worked at Boston Children's Hospital full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Great institutional mission
    Talented and caring medical staff

    Cons

    Senior departmental leadership that is as mean-spirited as it is ineffectual. Complete lack of strategy or long-term planning. Expectations that seem to shift by the minute with no tangible results, even years later. Sky's the limit attitude on spending when it comes to consultants and pet projects, while claiming there is no money in the budget to give hard-working staff full-time status with benefits. Constant foul-mouthed, nasty snipes from senior departmental leadership, including about other leaders in the hospital. Verbal and emotional abuse of a group of staff who really care about the hospital but are exploited and belittled at every turn. And perhaps worst of all, top hospital brass that either doesn't know or doesn't care how bad things are...despite an almost 100% staff turnover since present departmental leadership took over.

    Advice to Management

    IMO there is no advice that would improve things with the current departmental management. My advice to hospital leadership: take a real look under the surface. Talk to employees in private (not just through HR). And if you really want to preserve the institutional knowledge and commitment to the mission of this hospital that still exists in the department, replace senior leadership. Stat.

    I have been working at Boston Children's Hospital full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Reputation, mission, salary and benefits. Also, very good people in department

    Cons

    Terrible management, as mentioned by other reviewers. Department turnover over 50% in last 2 years, since new management took over. They are disorganized, crisis junkies who might be effective as sole contributors, but do not understand leadership. Some have commented that it is like "mean girls". Not enough recognition of accomplishments, but plenty of blame. Extremely stressful and without reward.

    Advice to Management

    HR is well aware of situation. Change is needed ASAP in upper management. It seems only to get more difficult.

    I have been working at Boston Children's Hospital full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Good hospital for children. Other than that, horrible place to work.

    Cons

    Mid-level department managers are uneducated, bullying, and lazy. One week vacation only even though earned time is over the limit! Was denied vacation 2 consecutive years because manager never trained a backup for my job. After 2 years, asked for 2 weeks and again was denied, put on probation because complaint was issued and finally given one week. Lousy place to work unless you are a doctor or nurse. Will be leaving in 3 months.

    Advice to Management

    Smarten up and hire people who care about their staff.
