I have been working at Boston Children's Hospital full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Management is big on work/life balance (at least in my division). There is a lot of flexibility when it comes to taking time off and working remotely. This is awesome if you have school age children or elderly parents.

    Cons

Salary is not competitive; promotion policies are inconsistent and based more on your relationship with management than your actual skills, ability, and performance; management does not address issues until they blow up which usually means someone is fired or quits and the rest of the team is left scrambling to pick up the pieces.

    Advice to Management

Pay more! It is an awesome feeling to work for the #1 pediatric hospital but that does not pay the bills especially in Boston. Create ongoing training for management especially senior managers. Provide a way for employees who report directly to upper management to provide feedback without fear of retaliation. Create clear and precise promotion policies that cannot be easily manipulated by managers to fit their whims.

I have been working at Boston Children's Hospital full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Very smart and dedicated PIs, postdocs and technicians

    Cons

Boston Children's Hospital treats employees as monolith, so researchers who will never be involved with patients (and aren't even in the same building!) wind up wasting time on meetings/trainings that are meant for clinicians and hospital staff (e.g. proper record keeping, patient confidentiality, etc.)

    Advice to Management

Realize that you have a large group of researchers that are not at all involved in patient care and so do not have the same working environment/requirements/day-to-day events as your hospital staff.

I have been working at Boston Children's Hospital full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good research experience. You would be part of a great project that would bring you a lot of personal satisfaction.

    Cons

Very low salary. Salary not competitive at all. You get over worked and paid very little. You would make way more money working in the same position elsewhere

    Advice to Management

They should do better with the salary

I have been working at Boston Children's Hospital full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great hospital, we have the best doctors in the world. Hospital is always under construction constantly improving it. Awesome cafeteria.

    Cons

Not treated with respect, long hours, micromanaged, under paid, expected to do more than what you are compensated for, no room for growth, no chance of getting raises.

    Advice to Management

Either pay more or hire more people for the job. The department is understaffed. What happened to the holiday bonuses?

I have been working at Boston Children's Hospital full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great work is done here. I now work behind the scenes but when I started my career with BCH I worked on an inpatient floor which was a very humbling experience. It helped me a lot when I had to deal with my own family crisis.

    Cons

I work alone and in a very demanding position. Getting time off can sometimes be a struggle. Egos run high and doctors are not very friendly. The pay is average and very little room for advancement unless you want to move to a different department.

    Advice to Management

None. My manager is very hands off- which I like. When I have a question , it gets answered.

I have been working at Boston Children's Hospital full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    great science
    amazing colleagues
closely associated with Harvard in regards of research

    Cons

Scientists here feel somewhat as second class employees since we're not part of the main focus of Boston Children's (providing medical care).
Being a postdoc with second-class benefits amplifies that view.

    Advice to Management

Don't make scientists regret joining you instead of Harvard Medical School departments.

I worked at Boston Children's Hospital full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Tons to learn, multitasking learn how to communicate with your fellow coworkers and patients and upper management. Great experience especially for new nurses who just graduated.

    Cons

Very very very busy and sometimes emotionally taxing, not much of a lunch break or bathroom break and sometimes work 1 to 2 hours after shift is over

    Advice to Management

Hire more nurses new and experienced and staffing ratio should improve!
