I have been working at Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Senior management does its best to listen to and respond to employee needs/complaints, supervision is the correct balance of autonomy and shared decision making, coworkers are all emotionally healthy and maintain appropriate work life/balance, benefits are very good, high reimbursement rate for government student loans, people are generally caring and considerate of one another, felt a tremendous amount of support as a newly licensed NP, staff shows genuine compassion towards patients, high degree of scientific evidence-based practice, high degree of social and moral support for new parents

    Cons

Serving a tough population means working in a tough neighborhood; namely the corner of Mass Ave and Albany Street. Don’t always feel safe when going to and from my car, bus or T. Many episodes of violent behavior. BHCHP does it’s best to enforces safety inside the building as well as within the perimeter, and security is available to walk staff to and from the nearest garage as needed.

    Advice to Management

Management has been putting forth great efforts to help staff maintain better work/life balance, and prevention of burnout. Please continue these efforts.

    Pros

    Mission oriented organization.
    Effective, approachable leadership.
    Work feels worthwhile.
    Room for growth/professional development.

    Cons

Like all organizations working with vulnerable groups there is a risk of becoming self-satisfied, losing sight of the big picture, and ending up as just one more institution benefiting from rather than serving the people intended to be served.

    Advice to Management

    Remain mission oriented.
    Continue to develop staff.
