I have been working at Boston Properties full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Decent pay, great benefits, individual office for each property accountant, summer Fridays at 3 pm, BXP lunch for employees to get together once a month, free snacks & hot beverages. Managers have been working with the company more than 15 years; they know every detail of work and hands-on for the team.

    Cons

    Need to re-structure for training.

    Advice to Management

Try harder to hire candidates with good work ethics. This will reduce the need for micro-managing. I heard stories of former employee sleeping during working hours and another one coming to work with a hang-over.

Adjust position titles to match job description: Assistant Property Accountant can be Property Accountant. Property Accountant can be Senior Property Accountant. Senior Property Accountant can be Accounting Manager. And Accounting Manager can be Assistant Controller.

Speed up the hiring process for new employees.

I have been working at Boston Properties full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Offices are okay, free lunch once a month, decent medical/dental benefits along with nice monthly commuter benefit. Some offices have summer hours on Fridays between July 1 to Sept 1.

    Cons

Very old school with very restrictive environment. All hours off must be accounted for and deducted from PTO. Office is very 1970's attitude. Professional dress code even if non client facing position. Below market salaries and vacation time. Everything must be printed out, signed by umpteen people and then scanned and uploaded. We are going through a forest of paper.

    Advice to Management

Improve salary levels to marketable rates, increase vacation time to three weeks and make everything available from the hire date like most companies do. Add VSP to benefits. Allow business casual to a degree and allow some flexibility with schedules. Upgrade systems to a central system for uploading documents and obtaining approvals. Reduce paper consumption.

I have been working at Boston Properties full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

401k, bonus, high exposure to industry professionals.

    Cons

Very Little growth opportunity unless you come in on the ground floor. Management expectations are high yet offer no real training. You will be expected to do not only your job but other people's job as well. Compensation does not always match the work load

I worked at Boston Properties full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The people were amazing, the benefits were the best I've ever had, and the buildings are awesome.

    Cons

Little to no room for growth after property accountant. Want to be a senior? Just wait 10 years. The current senior has been here for 15 years and just got promoted less than a year ago. They keep your title low even though you are really a senior so they can pay you less. They clock watch by checking your IMs and you have to use your time for everything. There's no making it up like every other place I worked. Plus I was exempt. Come on people. The manager can be pretty rude, and really needs to work on her people skills. She uses fear to manage and it's a terrible tactic. Plus they all micromanage you like crazy. It's like a daycare. Just don't act up. I'm the 6th person to leave the accounting team in the last year and a half if that gives you an indication of what it's like.

    Advice to Management

Treat your employees with respect. Offer them opportunities to learn and grow their careers. Your turnover will always be bad if you don't. Especially for people under 40. They will only deal with this for so long before they get fed up and leave.

I have been working at Boston Properties full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great benefits and friendly atmosphere, exposure to high end assets. 3PM fridays during the summer is great. The company offers other perks to get to know one another.

    Cons

Training is non-existent, management's ways of reviewing things is by micromanaging their staff. My team was once called into a room to point out to the rest of the team what a person did wrong/right. That is no way of providing constructive criticism. These processes needs to be revamped with more of a thought process.

    Advice to Management

Learn to trust your employees more, and adapt to change. The company is ran very well but stuck in the mindset of the 50's.

    Pros

The environment is pretty laid back

    Cons

The company does not promote from within. They are hesitant to promote women. Many upper level management are retired cops who just want to collect a second income, and don't really want to do work.

    Advice to Management

Take fewer than 7 months to hire new employees, and promote your current employees.

    Pros

    Best in class benefits.
    Match 401k 6%

    Cons

Difficult to move up within company. Tend to hire from the outside.
Salary is not on par with peers in the industry. Many within company feel same way.

    Advice to Management

Research what avg pay for each dept is vs peers in industry in each market.
In addition, 2% raise is certainly not standard in CRE industry.
