I have been working at Boston Public Schools full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - Meaningful work
    - Amazing/Smart Colleagues
    - Nice Office

    Cons

    - Lots of politics
    - Things move slowly (and frustratingly)
    - Not a young culture

    Advice to Management

    - Invest in culture development -- even if projects move slowly and things are frustrating, at least make sure everyone knows each other and can have fun at work
    - Spend some time having (at least quarterly, if not monthly) "all-hands" meetings so that folks know what is going on, what progress has been made, and how their work has helped improve student impact

    Disapproves of CEO

I have been working at Boston Public Schools full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Allows you to really make a huge impact in students lives

    Cons

Unequal opportunities on all levels for employees of color and students of color.
Does not enforce City of Boston residency ordinance. Vast amount of people from other cities and states work for BPS

    Advice to Management

Enforce equal opportunities for all, especially in upper level of management. Enforce the City of Boston Residency Ordinance. Hiring process is mostly based on who you know and not your credentials most times.

I have been working at Boston Public Schools full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good pay compared to other districts. Great Heath benefits. Great opportunities to help student growth.

    Cons

Expectations not listed in the job description. Policies that are not reviewed as whole staff at meetings at the beginning of each school year so new staff can learn the ropes; must be learned the hard way. The union is meant to protect but it can also get you. Paraprofessional position under appreciated. No paid or limited non-pay professional developments or training for para staff. Limited opportunity for financial growth after BA degree.

    Advice to Management

Develop paid trainings. Exchange one sick day per year in to one additional personal day.
