I have been working at Boston Public Schools full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good pay compared to other districts. Great Heath benefits. Great opportunities to help student growth.

    Cons

Expectations not listed in the job description. Policies that are not reviewed as whole staff at meetings at the beginning of each school year so new staff can learn the ropes; must be learned the hard way. The union is meant to protect but it can also get you. Paraprofessional position under appreciated. No paid or limited non-pay professional developments or training for para staff. Limited opportunity for financial growth after BA degree.

    Advice to Management

Develop paid trainings. Exchange one sick day per year in to one additional personal day.

I worked at Boston Public Schools full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Unlike most major metro districts in America BPS compensates fairly
    - Being in a city like Boston means schools have a plethora of partners that can contribute to substantial education initiatives
    - Great mix of experienced and new staff

    Cons

    - Often times it seems like broad budgetary decisions are made that do not put students at the center of the equation.
    - Sometimes pedagogical strategies are pushed upon schools without proper professional development on both why these decisions are happening and how to ensure they will drive exceptional outcomes, therefore, teachers are resistant
    - Selective poaching from charter schools is leaving BPS with an inordinate number of high needs students that are being disserviced in their schools because they lack the resources. Inclusion is a terrific principal for schools to promote, but when a classroom has 98% low-income, 30% English Language Learners, and 25% students with disabilities there are too many high indicator needs to be met.

    Advice to Management

Do not just push research based practices onto schools that are designed to turn them around, ensure that whatever incentives are pushed are enthusiastically supported with professional development in the schools

I worked at Boston Public Schools full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Enjoyed working with people and valued education.

    Cons

The only downside is to spend many hours at home preparing for the following/week and not having as much desired free time with the family. Still enjoyed it though.

    Advice to Management

Appreciate your teachers who work hard to provide the best education to our inner city young people. Maintain a contact with parents and encourage them to participate in their children education.
