  1. "Substitute teaching is a good part-time job"

I have been working at Boston Public Schools part-time

    Pros

Work when you want, plenty of options of different schools and grades, pay is not bad for a part time, job security is pretty good

    Cons

The school system is crazy and there are many schools with serious behavioral issues from students, not for everyone, sometimes they switch you around to a job you didn't sign up for, no PTO or paid sick days, no work for the summer

    Advice to Management

When someone signs up for a job, they should get that job. They shouldn't be randomly tossed into a position they did not sign up for.

I worked at Boston Public Schools full-time

    Pros

Pay scale is great and clear. Vacations are also clear and planned out. The students of Boston are diverse in experience and so much more.

    Cons

Principals can make or break a school and school culture and mine broke my school culture. It is demanding work and can feel very isolating and that there is a high demand with little support from peers.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your teachers and take care of them. Their health is the students health.

I have been working at Boston Public Schools full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good pay compared to other districts. Great Heath benefits. Great opportunities to help student growth.

    Cons

Expectations not listed in the job description. Policies that are not reviewed as whole staff at meetings at the beginning of each school year so new staff can learn the ropes; must be learned the hard way. The union is meant to protect but it can also get you. Paraprofessional position under appreciated. No paid or limited non-pay professional developments or training for para staff. Limited opportunity for financial growth after BA degree.

    Advice to Management

Develop paid trainings. Exchange one sick day per year in to one additional personal day.

The pay and benefits are good. Much needed vacation time at set times of the year. Can be fulfilling, especially when you get to see your former students doing well.
