I worked at Boston Public Schools part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I wanted to work part time and was able to as a sub. I continue to look for p/t employment. I have a f/t job and can work some mornings, afternoons or evenings depending on my demand. A p/t job suits my needs because it allows for my schedule.

    Cons

Because I was new I didn't automatically know how to handle surprising situations. It was the job where I gained a lot of experience with teaching all age ranges.

    Advice to Management

    N/A

I have been working at Boston Public Schools full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

BPS has great benefits and pay! It also has a diverse student and teacher population at most schools. The success of their Pilot Schools has helped shape education policy across the country.

    Cons

Horrible infrastructure, and clearly no long-term career security regardless of how great an educator you may be! After spending so much time and money keeping certifications/licensure updated you can expect to be pushed out of most schools due to budget cuts (all the while BPS is giving Charters millions to fill their positions with unlicensed, inexperienced teachers).

    Advice to Management

Begin to value the great teachers already employed that have made BPS one of the most successful urban school districts in the country!

Working with students is rewarding. You feel like you are contributing to the future of the planet. It is exciting to see students learn.

    Cons

It can be a political place. Some colleagues never grow up from when they were in school. It requires an extreme amount of diplomacy.

I have been working at Boston Public Schools full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The most important reason I work for BPS is serving the children and families in city I love and was born and raised in... What more do I have to say? I come to work early, leave late and try to make a difference in the life of each and every student that I've been blessed to work with for the past 23 yrs.

    Cons

Politics, cutbacks, school closings, lack of funding along wirh an alarming number of administrators instead of old time principals have attributed to the downside of public education.

    Advice to Management

Remember why we do what we do. It's not about money, contracts or unions. It's about family, children, community, an equal education and opportunity for all children and most importantly, LOVE!

I worked at Boston Public Schools full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

You get a lot of autonomy as a teacher in running your classroom.
    Teachers are usually very supportive.

    Cons

Administration doesn't always have your back, and some can be difficult to work with.
The number of students that need one on one support is sometimes overwhelming. Class sizes and job requirements don't make it easy.
Resources are difficult. You often have to buy things out of pocket.

    Advice to Management

My advice to the BPS is to stop stressing the principals out so that they can focus more on running their schools and less on fighting with the district to get resources.
