    Pros

Great place to work and good environment. People are willing to help and staff is friendly. I would recommend

    Cons

There aren't any cons other than the schools need more funding for supplies for the students

I have been working at Boston full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Benefits are good! Several choices of health insurance and vision and dental coverage included. As well as retirement funds and life insurance. Great central location.

    Cons

Residency requirement on low salaries is really hard to maintain. It helps to know people at city hall. If you've worked there for a while, the unions can protect you and people get away with low work levels. People can get interviews for their friends even if they aren't qualified. Advancement is based on how you know and how important they are. Hey, it's politics...

    Pros

The Boston Police Department is like a big family. There when necessary.

    Cons

Promotion is difficult to acquire because of the long term employment

    Advice to Management

Best to promote people in accordance to their abilities not who they are related to

    I worked at Boston full-time

    Pros

Interesting work, smart people, decent benefits package.

    Cons

Having to make a salary limited to what can be paid to a government attorney, and having to live within Boston City Limits is a real crunch, especially when still paying off law school loans. It's either a short-term job or you need to have some family money to make it work long term.

    Advice to Management

There's a feeling that the Corporation Counsel is very disconnected from his law staff, and disinterested in making them feel like valuable employees. Pay more attention to what employees need, like raises more than every 5 years, or even just knowing what is going on in the law office.

    Pros

Many wonderful fellow employees who are a joy to work with. Pension possibilities if one is able to stay with the city for more than 20 years.

    Cons

Progress is often frustratingly slow due to the bureaucratic red tape that is necessary to get anything approved and implemented. The Mayor's office tends to make its decisions based upon political expediency and public image, rather than common sense and provable need.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the highly educated professionals that you have hired, instead of worrying about the possible impact on the next election. Move on our requests much more quickly instead of having them get buried for months in various reviews.

I worked at Boston full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

If you are creative and resourceful, there are a lot of opportunities to innovate city services even in an admin role. If you have a thick skin and are sound in health, you'll be fine. This is not a place to the weak hearted or emotionally intelligent.

    Cons

The management style is very archaic, with a top-down approach and chain of command. While you're signing out of the office to use the bathroom, or relaying messages through a series of people instead of directly, you'll probably be thinking about applying for new jobs over the weekend.

    Advice to Management

Guys, I know this is all public funded and employee perks can't be extravagant ... but being supportive, friendly, and positive doesn't cost anything. Morale boosting and employee happiness is severely missing - which continues a sad cliche that municipal work is a hopeless career with folks one foot out the door to retirement. You hire bright young minds, but they don't last. Step in the the 21st century please!
