I have been working at Boston Scientific full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Boston Scientific has better perks, benefits, and recognition than my previous company. They are big on work life flexibility and they do respect it.

    Cons

Finding a con for this company is difficult. Communication between groups are lacking and that vacation time is used for two shutdowns (forced to use vacation).

    Advice to Management

Keep your people happy and output / moral will grow.

    Pros

Highly skilled teams. Very deep technical and scientific background of my team members. We elevate quality every day and have the patients best interest in mind at all times. 3 years ago the CRM team established a road map to recover from a few unfortunate events. That vision is becoming a reality now with the launch of 10 of the best products in the market and you can feel the energy growing around every corner. Each of our products is designed to help save or improve real people's lives. There are very few places you can work where you can have as much meaning. At Boston Scientific you are working not just for a pay check but for the patient who will experience a better life because of what you do.

    Cons

While we deliver extremely good products to the market place our strategic marketing is sometimes challenged to figure out what is really important and stick to it. This is not the case from Jim Tobin, but one or two levels below him.

    Advice to Management

Clearly define what Boston Scientific's values are.

    Pros

Boston Scientific is a place that has made enough mistakes in the past to really value doing things the right way. Whether it be use of technology, employee training or adoption the pursuit of CI at all sites, there is a lot to point to at BSC that makes me feel like I am at a company heading in the right direction.

    Cons

Because of frequent aquisitions and divestments, there is a certain amount of flux present at BSC. Working at the corporate office, there was a lot of talk about "us" and "them" in reference to BSC and recently aquired Guidant.

    Advice to Management

Please stop thinking of BSC as a portfolio of medical device companies. Instead, make the many companies which have been aquired over the years a consolidated and cohesive company.

    Pros

Variety of work, exposure to a lot of different scenarios in regards to medical device manufacturing, intelligent management, good pay

    Cons

Not much to do in Indiana, some people at facility don't really enjoy helping co-ops, some people very lazy at facility

    Advice to Management

Didn't communicate a whole lot with management but when I did they always seemed to be on top of things

    Pros

Solid and necessary industry. Meaningful work.

    Cons

The company is struggling with management changes.

    Advice to Management

Keep forcing Lean Principles by requiring waste reduction at all levels. Reward for it during tours and create system to elevate suggestions in improving other departments and a forum to share improvements between others.

    Pros

BSC makes compelling products, and management is pretty forward thinking of late about using the best technology possible. I've had great options for career advancement and feel like I'm part of a solid team.

    Cons

It's a very large company - this is both a blessing and a curse. There have been movements to use offshore teams more in the last 4 years.

    Advice to Management

Less VPs, more engineers. Follow the Apple model and put your money into engineering better products rather than employing more VPs.

In my area relatively little opportunity for career growth.

Boston Scientific provides its employees strong benefits, flexible schedule, strong product line, great staff. It is a very enjoyable place to go to wrork

    Cons

Relatively flat, lean structure which leads to less opportunities for promotion.

    Pros

Job security (as a product builder)
    Lots of Vacation time
Friendly supervisors (I've had at least 5)
    Diversity of employees

    Cons

Lots of 6 day workweeks (rarely 7)
Can be difficult to get the exact days off you want (only a certain amount of people per line)

    Advice to Management

Continue in doing what you do. Perhaps find a way so that so many people are not forced to work Saturdays when they don't want to work Saturdays. I understand that is challenging in a production setting.

I worked at Boston Scientific full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The people - at all levels. The Executive Team is always striving to put out the best new products, with the highest quality, in the shortest amount of time.

    Cons

There are definitely some people that need to move on as they have definitely overstayed their effectiveness. Also, without some recognition by the stock market for all of the new innovations that get launched each year, there will always be a "small man" complex.

    Advice to Management

Take some risks and promote some talent two levels down. The old boys club isn't working.
