    Business Outlook

    Pros

The workload is not that much if you are a graduate student at the same time

    Cons

The pay is low relative to the other universities specially considering the fact that we are living in an expensive city like Boston

Admin Job in Academia - Mixed Bag

Feb 10, 2023 - Administrative Coordinator in Boston, MA
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Decent benefits - good insurance coverage w/ Blue Cross Blue Shield (although expensive, you pay $45/week for the PPO plan), partially subsidized T pass, dental, discounts/discounted memberships to services like Zipcar. Easy to apply for/get promoted to other positions around the university.

    Cons

Entrenched in bureaucracy - anything you want to do personally or professionally requires endless emails and paperwork. Pay is on the low end of similar positions around the area and barely covers cost of living in such an expensive city. Management and training varies widely depending on your individual department and manager.

    Pros

Near Fenway. Wide range of departments and mobility. Free classes. Currently trying to fix multiple systemic and hereditary problems all at once.

    Cons

Fractured administration. Antiquated IT systems and no technical support. Under-staffed at the bottom, over-staffed at the top. Pay is not competitive with other local universities or appropriate for the cost of living. 2.5% annual merit increases.

Great Work-Life Balance and Benefits, but underpaid

Mar 16, 2023 - Marketing Communications in Boston, MA
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

-Stable business, even under reorgs my department is able to help everyone stay. No jobs lost during covid -Manager who cares about my career growth and actively supports DEI initiatives. -Great hybrid team environment -Work feels rewarding, was a great transition from working as a vendor. -lots of vacation, sick time and covid sick time -remote work available

    Cons

-Pay is not competitive with surrounding institutions and private sector. I'm willing to trade off less pay for better benefits and work life balance but with how expensive Boston rent is getting I am forced to reevaluate my position unless paid more. -Lots of politics to navigate naturally in this industry. A bit of a double edge sword, slower pace than private sector which is nice but also means decisions take a bit longer. -Legacy managers known to be emotionally abusive to staff in other areas wont be pushed out. Better to hop to another department or out of company to avoid rather then staying. I was never affected thankfully but quite a few folks have left over the years because of this.

    Pros

You get to interact with students in a great teaching setting and you get to meet with and work with professors.

    Cons

The pay is not competitive and it is not equal to the amount of work you actually do.

    OK but limiting

Jun 6, 2014 - Graduate Teaching Fellow in Boston, MA
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

    - Good experience - Good working environment if you get placed with a good professor

    Cons

    - Pay is limiting. You're not allowed to work any additional jobs. Making $20K and ONLY $20K in Boston is pretty low pay considering cost of living. This makes it hard to finish the academic program and a number of people have dropped out of my PhD program because of it. - Restrictions on not being able to work mean grad students no longer have the opportunity to teach their own courses at MET or other universities. This is seriously hurting graduates' abilities to secure jobs. In my field you HAVE to have teaching experience and now we are no longer allowed to get that. - Long hours when grading

    It got me through school

    Jan 9, 2017 - Anonymous Employee
    Recommend

    Business Outlook

    Pros

It was great getting free dining hall meals with a shift

    Cons

Working as a student manager offers low pay and high stress. Full time managers overwork you and encourage you to prioritize work over studies. The amount of work and stress you trade in for the minimal pay increase is not at all worth it. And the so-called 'professional and leadership skills' you can put on your resume don't help you in the work force at all. My advise is to turn down any offer to be promoted to student manager, and find an internship (that you can put on a resume) instead.

    Pros

Good for teaching experience and freedom to curate your own style within the prescribed curriculum

    Cons

Limited number of classes and very low pay considering the most of the employees already have a masters

    Very pleasant experience.

Jan 27, 2011 - Financial Administrator in Boston, MA
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

The benefits are excellent, especially the tuition remission and the retirement plans. Additionally there is trainining available to help you improve your skill set.

    Cons

There is a heavy emphasis on degrees not quality of work when determing pay increases and promotions. This can be frustrating when you bust your butt and someone gets better raise beause they have more degrees, yet are lazy.
