Terrible, clueless, inept Board of Directors; staff who frequently can’t be bothered to do their jobs; a back-stabbing, gossipy environment

Get rid of 90% of the Board and 50% of the staff. Or everyone and start from scratch.

I worked at Boys & Girls Clubs part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

It is a privelege to contribute to such a worthwhile cause. The kids are a joy to be around.

    Cons

Disorganized, lack of leadership, lack of teamwork, and very low pay.

    Advice to Management

Invest in the staff. Give them proper training, support, and mentorship, and provide them with opportunity for growth.

I worked at Boys & Girls Clubs part-time

    Pros

Ability to build relationships with kids and make positive difference

    Cons

My experience there was stressful and isolating. Working with the kids there was great and they really made me want to stay. However, what caused me to quit was the isolating and negative environment I felt from other coworkers there. I did not feel welcome or properly trained. This was disappointing because it seems to opposite of what the organization stands for. It seemed that behind the scenes, this was not the case. There was a very unprofessional and intimidating vibe from coworkers and very clique-ish. Trying to deal with this high-school like workplace environment makes it really hard to be your best with these kids. I hope this is not the case with all of their sites! I am not usually writing negative reviews, but this was something that clearly was a bad experience which caused me to doubt my own abilities. Pay attention to the way coworkers interact with you right from the start. If they are cold and downplay your leadership, please do not stick around like I did!

    Advice to Management

Keep an eye on the work environment. Put more confidence into employee capabilities and have higher expectations for personal conduct outside of kid's activities.

    Pros

Impact Children's Lives for the Better
Fun and Interactive Opportunity to Develop Soft Skills

    Cons

    Administration
    Unfair Pay
Troubling Future for the Children and the Employees

    Advice to Management

You must follow California State law on salaries. If a person is in charge of multiple people and has administration duties that deals with daily operation you must pay them a salary sufficient enough for their position.

I worked at Boys & Girls Clubs part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Amazing to work with the children and help them develop. As part of my duties I was able to share my love for the outdoors with the children I supervised.

    Cons

No time to plan for activities as the management demanded we do at work, on the clock, but expected us to only show up when the children were there. Too many leaders pulling staff different directions without having one plan in mind.

    Advice to Management

Have a leader. Have a plan. Enforce it.

I worked at Boys & Girls Clubs full-time

    Pros

The organization's mission to help disadvantage kids and the programs that many of the clubs do for the children in communities across the country is tremendous.

    Cons

Many of the clubs in smaller areas of the country don't get to take advantage of the programs and funding because of a lack of communication and willingness to work with smaller clubs. Management in many areas lacks quality management skills and treats newer employees poorly. The turnover rate there is very high and the HR department is not one that advocates for employees so assistance with workplace issues are almost impossible to resolve. The resolution is termination when there is a complaint made.
