I worked at Boys & Girls Clubs part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Very flexible schedule, they were willing to give me time off and change my schedule if I decided to work another job or return to school.

    Cons

Be prepared for people coming in late or leaving unannounced; the children are very challenging and often some people are not ready for the job, or realize they are not fit for working with kids directly.

I worked at Boys & Girls Clubs as an intern

    Pros

Wonderful people, wonderful company, wonderful mission. My coworkers are also my community

    Cons

Lack of resources makes it hard to carry out larger goals and it's not a very lucrative position

I worked at Boys & Girls Clubs part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The staff is really organized and efficient, you will always know your hours weeks ahead of time and what activities your'll be doing. There are also staff meetings to make sure everyone has the same goals and objectives. There is alot of hands on interaction with the kids that you can choose to make the best out of. Children are so entertaining when you sit down and talk to them. There is a strong sense of community so after a while you will start to feel like you're a community staple yourself, which is great because you never know what kind of connections you could be making. Become a kid's hero and their mom just might offer you a job, happened for me.

    Cons

You have to have an assertive but tender personality. For safety and health reasons the children have to respect your authority and listen. But if they're scared of you they won't want to come and parents will be upset. It takes the right personality. Spending alot of time with kids can aggravate you if you are not a children person. They are also really stingy raises and definitely promotions. It's a great stepping stool into other jobs though.

    Advice to Management

Retention rates will never be that strong if you refuse to give people raises and promotions. Provide opportunities for further education.
