I worked at Brandon Residential Treatment Center (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Supportive environment. Ed management really supports professional development . Flexible and working in best interest of students! Ed mgmt had open door policy!

    Cons

Very challenging population. Difficult to compete with public school schedule. Should try to raise salaries for school staff versus other positions since so hard to work with these kids in school!

    Advice to Management

Keep supporting the professional development of staff. Senior leader in Ed department really kept that a high priority and that helped with retention.

I have been working at Brandon Residential Treatment Center full-time

    Pros

Many days feel like you're doing meaningful work.
Some of the staff is nice to work with.
Good way to get your foot in the door.

    Cons

They do train you, but not enough and not the right way.
Overall management really couldn't care less about you. They will hang you out to dry when they aren't setting you up for failure themselves.
The lack of communication, support and guidance harms you in the long run.
Many resi counsellors are college students just here for the menial pay check and require LOTS of direction to do their job and keep the environment safe.
When applying for different jobs or trying to move up in the industry, other institutions LOOK DOWN on this company.

    Advice to Management

Get your act together. You can't have all the meetings and collaborations without the input from actual resi workers because your ideas will be based on your ideal circumstances without regard to the individual clients or realities the houses are dealing with.
CARE is a philosophy NOT a policy- especially when dealing with the more severe kids that you claim we won't get anymore.
Put some stock in your employees because we do A LOT and still show up everyday despite the abuse from the clients and higher staff.

I worked at Brandon Residential Treatment Center full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Working with kids, regular hours, no weekends, no "mandated" overtime, small setting- get to know who everyone is, both employees & kids.

    Cons

Lower than average Pay, Unstable management, high turnover, Administrative leadership is very cliquey, MAP Med program execution was very disorganized

    Advice to Management

Managers of departments should perform regular performance reviews, such as 90-day, 6 month, & yearly after that. I did not receive a single 'formal' performance eval in my time there.

    Pros

    Direct care staff is amazing.

    Cons

Just about everything else. Not the place to work if you want to make a difference because you are not given the tools or structure to do so. Everyone flies by the seat of their pants. Everyday. No effective systems in place to manage day-to-day needs. Crisis management. Everyday. Poor follow through residential-to-school. Everyday. Sick children not taken to see their doctors because management WOULD NOT hire a transporter and "no one is available right now to transport".

    Advice to Management

Keep in mind the vulnerability of the boys you serve. Remember that YOU are responsible for caring for these children. Make decisions as if they were your own children. Otherwise, shut your doors.
