    Pros

Get to see tangible changes in individuals in the unit and work with a great community of people who really want to help out

    Cons

It is a large mental commitment that does not get reflected in the pay for the entry level work however that is that case with helping out people

I worked at Brattleboro Retreat part-time

    Pros

This was an excellent position to become familiar with the mental health field. The co-workers and management were very friendly and reasonable.

    Cons

There is not much upward mobility from this role to receive a substantial increase in pay without going to school for a different job (social worker, nurse, psychiatrist, etc.)

Small, independent hospital with long history in community.
Well known and well regarded in the state.
Several innovative programs like LGBT and young adult.
A somewhat active union for RNs and MHWs.
    Decent paid time off.

    Cons

Administration not always in tune with employee's needs or recommendations.
Wide variability of skill and professionalism of staff.

    Advice to Management

Recruit from a wider region to attract the best employees.
Listen to and implement suggestions from the unit floors. They know the patients best.

I have been working at Brattleboro Retreat part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

For part-time flexible work there are opportunities to earn a little better than average for the level of schooling required

    Cons

Many challenges to grow as a whole organization. Us-and-Them mentality pervades (administrative vs patient-facing, staff vs patient) must change. Chronic scrutiny by certifying bodies, state and federal, with problems revealed and restrictions imposed, dampened morale deeply.

    Advice to Management

Outgoing CEO rebuilt thriving business from close to the edge years ago. But new vision, whole new understanding and respect for patients and staff needed. Very timely for new CEO set to begin March 2016. Let's hope fundamental change comes.
