    Pros

Tough to make the cut but worth it. Outstanding career opportunity. Relatively small group has extraordinary global reach

    Cons

The level of intelligence output provided by this firm demands hard work and discipline. To make partner you must perform.

    Advice to Management

Maintain same high quality standards and hire only absolutely top people.

I worked at Brendan Wood International full-time

    Pros

    The Good:
Interesting business ideas. CEO is an incredible salesman.

    Cons

    The Bad:
Firm over promises and under delivers on its commitments to both clients and employees.

    The Ugly:
Instead of focusing his sales skill on clients, the CEO is more interested in building a cult of personality. He convinces himself that his ideas are perfect, and then recruits acolytes to help him spread the gospel. Any inability of his employees to sell the firm's (ie his) ideas is due to a lack of faith.

The company has an extremely strong us-vs-the world mentality, where anyone who leaves the firm is a loser and a failure. They are extremely sensitive to criticism, and will flood review sites (like this one) with false positive endorsements while simultaneously attacking any critics.

These problems make the company a terrible work environment for a new hire. But the story is even worse for the long-term employees. A 'partner' is someone who has been convinced to plunge their life savings into the endeavor and join a possible ponzi-scheme.

    Advice to Management

Hire professional management focused on executing the ideas of the CEO, back off on the cultishness, don't hire impressionable kids right out of university, and this could be an great firm.

I have been working at Brendan Wood International (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The company has a world class clientele, an outstanding reputation for the highest quality capital markets intelligence on the planet. Interns are offered unique opportunities to tackle serious challenges at a very early stage in their careers. The alumni and employees of this firm speak for themselves on the company web site. The genuine employee reviews ,where alumni and employees clearly identify themselves, consistently refer to an extraordinary learning curve and personal growth path. The firm pays its young people well, the benefits are good and there is a mandatory 4 week vacation plan for all employees. The training aspect is the huge advantage which distinguishes this as a learning opportunity and puts it in a class of its own. The company works in an open forum and the transparency is unique. Decisions are made on the spot, allowing young persons to quickly grasp the experience of the partners, listening in to the discussion on all kinds of issues and challenges. The firm is privileged to work on the most relevant issues in the world. Its inteliigence programs are all designed within the walls of the company and are independently financed by this firm's partners. The company is highly successful, owns its own building and uses no lines of credit, rather operates on shareholder capital. It is a model company ,operating with the highest standards of ethics and integrity as is well known to its clientele and alumni.

    Cons

The standards are high for work ethic and integrity. Occasionally an intern fails to meet such tests. The company has sometimes been victimized by bitterness arising from employees who despite the firm's gracious exit procedures and severance ,exercise resentment before and especially after their departure. Fortunately, these experiences are outweighed by the positives but anonymous venom is distracting . I am amazed at the partners irrepressible patience and optimism. The name on the door and the company"s relatively small size make it an ideal target for those who are caught out by the standards which are rigidly enforced as they have to be.

    Advice to Management

Keep the 43 year tradition going and hire the best.

    Pros

Open concept working style with all employees working around one huge desk. This makes creating relationships better and you are able to learn from your colleagues passively. The team there works extremely hard.

    Cons

    1. The working day is 10 hrs, 8am-6pm
    2. Management was not very open to constructive feedback from the "front line"

    Advice to Management

Be a bit more open to feedback

    Pros

This is a school unlike any other in the capital markets. The company operates in a niche and provides capital markets advisory to major public corporations, brokers-dealers, investment banks and institutional investors. The learning curve is steep at the outset as you try to master and connect the different areas of the business with one another. The management does not hesitate to entrust you with responsibilities pertaining to client delivery, they encourage you to be entrepreneurial in your thinking and very client-oriented the ways in which one can add value. The job is two-fold, it is supplying intelligence and providing advisory. Both go hand in hand. It is great that employees are groomed and brought up in an environment that encourages dealing with the decision makers. You learn so much, especially when the time comes to deliver to clients and you get to provide real material help that they wouldn't be able to obtain elsewhere. The organization pushes the envelop in everything it does, and as a small shop, you get to wear many hats on any given day, which keeps things very dynamic. You never realize how much you are able to accomplish until you work here. Also, the company's wine cellar is nothing short of incredible!

    Cons

The company is a small nimble shop with very high expectations, as that is what their clients expect. Sometimes that can take a toll on employees not used to such a fast paced client-oriented environment. If you're looking for a regular 9-5 job, forty hour work week, then look elsewhere.

    Advice to Management

The future of the business rests with its people. Do not change or undermine your values because that is what makes the value proposition so unique and quality of work so high.

    Pros

Before starting they mentioned that if I applied myself, the learn curve here would be very steep and this was definitely precise. I've learned an immense amount in the short-term I've been here not just in finance field but even just in terms of soft skills. They will go above and beyond in training you and you are given responsibility on day one and you'll gain a lot of knowledge/experience through having access to industry leaders.

Before joining the firm I was contemplating a graduate degree in the future but at this point I believe my time will be more efficiently spent in an environment like BWI.

    Cons

The firm is result-driven so at times when trying to rocket yourself forward you`ll end up working a lot of hours and your leisure/rest time will slump. It may be difficult figuring out optimal ways for work/life balance.

    Advice to Management

Continue doing a good job in training your staff and moving individuals up the curve.

    Pros

Unlimited opportunity to connect with, learn from and provide advice to financial leaders around the world and the ability to work directly with clients from the start (Corporate Executives, Banking Professionals and Investors). In most corporate cultures you wouldn't be given the opportunity to work with these people for years.

    Cons

Responsibility and taking ownership of your work is key. If you don't take ownership of your work and follow it through to the end you won't learn from it.

    Pros

Brendan Wood International has been a fantastic opportunity for me. The partners are helpful and provide a lot of hands-on teaching. Everyone in the firm is on a learning curve which I love. I am learning something new every day. I see an excellent growth trajectory for the next 12 months. The business is focused on the international landscape.

    Cons

Brendan Wood International is not for everyone. If you love being on a learning curve, this is for you.

    Advice to Management

The management should continue focusing on the international landscape. There is a lot of growth potential outside of Canada.
