Former Employee - Deputy Sheriff in Melbourne, FL

I worked at Brevard County Sheriff full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Great equipment, take home car, training and advancement opportunities, generous time off, and some of the greatest co-workers ever.

    Cons

Not many really. Like most jobs, it is what you make of it. However, this agency had a lot less drama that many others in our area and in other places I have worked. Pay, as usual, is always and issue. But, for the area, the OT, training and details made up for much of what was lacking. The agency tried to do it's best to help out in a constructive and fiscally responsibile manner.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the good work!

    Positive Outlook

I worked at Brevard County Sheriff for more than 10 years

    Pros

Excellent agency to work with. Many opportunities for sworn and civilian employees for lateral movement as well as promotions. Good starting pay with benefits and retirement. Great training opportunities and continuing education.

    Cons

Patrol shifts are long, 12 hour shifts. However, you do get every other weekend off. Due to the number of civilian positions, promotions opportunities are rare.

    Advice to Management

Continue to foster the family/teamwork atmosphere at the Sheriff's Office. Focus on recognition of patrol deputies who do not want to advance to other ranks.

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at Brevard County Sheriff for more than 3 years

    Pros

There's a lot that goes into the job but it's repetitive, so it's not hard at all. Here are a few pros... -The jail is a 365 days a year, 7 days a week and 24 hours a day operation. So you don't have to worry about not having to show up for work. -The starting pay is not bad for Brevard County and for those who don't have a degree. -Receive step plan increases yearly (raises for each year of service) if the... budget allows.

    Cons

Now to the cons... -The jail is severely understaffed and the brass does not care. -There's room for promotion, but it's based purely off of politics and who the brass likes. -Brass does not care to get to know their officers and civilians. If they do not like you for whatever reason (real or imagined), there's virtually nothing you can do to help your case. -The price of insurance continually increases so... much so that you will still lose money with their incremental pay raises. -Whenever there is a supposed budget issue, the jail is the first to take a hit financially.

    Advice to Management

-Learn how to actually do the job yourself. -Promote people who actually care about your organization and want to see it succeed. -Promote people who will actually care about their fellow employees and treat them with respect. -Promote policies and procedures that will make the jail operate like a jail, instead of a zoo.

  5. "Mounted Posse"

     in Rockledge, FL

I worked at Brevard County Sheriff

    Pros

Community Outreach. Static Displays. Parades, Parades and more parades.

    Cons

You will be expected to spend excessive time training your own horse. Very little equipment is provided. Confusing direction and constant change in staff. Unpleasant co-workers, demands of job exceed the level of volunteerism. Disorganized, untrained management who truly lack the training in Mounted Policing. Volunteers are used and treated unfairly, and rudley by management.

I have been working at Brevard County Sheriff

    Pros

Decent pay Good time off Free food If you want a decent paying job, not a career take it for a few years. You'll always have job security

    Cons

Poor administrative decisions Good ol boy management Never support employees Mickey Mouse agency If you're looking for a career look elsewhere Very expensive health insurance Incredibility poor morale You'll die of a heart attack if you make it to retirement.

    Advice to Management

Act like a real corporation. Entitlement and Punishments should be the same for all, not just the few that donated to the most recent campaign.

  7. "Good luck unless you know someone."

    StarStarStarStarStar

I worked at Brevard County Sheriff

    Pros

Pay is pretty good for the field

    Cons

First, good luck getting hired if you have any semblance of education or intelligence. They pretty much only hire people with high school education, working at a minimum wage job is a huge plus. Because skill flipping burgers translates to this job right? They pretty much only hire their friends, if you have an uncle or a dad who works there, they will drop requirements that other people won't be hired because... of. There is a big "bro system"present within the recruitment team. People have been hired and remained employed after they had inappropriate relations with inmates as well. It's all who you know with this place. They won't hire you if you're too far outside their circle. They see you as someone who could prevent what they're doing in the future.

I have been working at Brevard County Sheriff

    Pros

Job security. benefits, retirement, made friends

    Cons

things have been getting really bad lately with moral. we have election coming up and things are getting nasty. I am getting worn out from delealing with everything and think it may be time to move on.

    Advice to Management

Wish you would remember where you came from and treat people with the respect they deserve. Don't take things so personal and punish people for not having the same beliefs as you.
