I worked at Brickman full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Good chance to work with diverse crew, practice time management, and learn the "on the ground" side of the business.

    Cons

Sales was unrealistic about estimating jobs. Crews take great pride in delivering excellent work but the money isn't built in when bidding jobs to do job correctly. Crews and supervisors get dumped on from Superintendents and customers.

    Advice to Management

Deliver on promises made to new hires, give them training opportunities and prepare them for promotions rather than bringing in outside hires that don't fulfill and just move on to the next job.

    I worked at Brickman

    Pros

Good benefits and Good experience to move on

    Cons

Terrible pay, and terrible management. Management has no problem at all promising their employees things they knowingly cannot deliver. Very cut throat and the only thing that matters is getting the most production out of each employee (at any level) for the least amount of money. The usual corporate bottom-line scenario. It's very clear the negative direction this company is heading and talent is leaving everywhere. The value of the comany's quality of work has significantly changed and it's costing them. Brickman was a great company, Brightview is its fall.

I worked at Brickman for more than 3 years

    Pros

Good equipment and a recognizable name on your resume when it's time to leave. I ended up finding a management level position with a competitor for much more money.

    Cons

This company is heading in a terrible direction. I worked for Brickman for 4 years and my first two we're somewhat enjoyable. The last two, it became very clear what Brickman is becoming. Many questionable decisions made by management. Management likes to manipulate employees to get what they want for pennies. They will do it through bogus write-ups, performance improvement plans, etc. So when it's time for your annual salary review or promotion, they will tell you no. Just a pathetic management tactic, but I guess that's typical corporate greed.

    Advice to Management

Take care of your top performer employees and slim down on so much unnecessary upper management overhead. You will never be able to retain good employees with so much overhead.

    I worked at Brickman

    Pros

Get to work outside. Learn about irrigation on a large scale, if that's something you're interested in.

    Cons

Bad pay. They stress safety every day then come snow plowing time they put you behind a plow for 40 hrs straight. It's all about the quarterly numbers and you're less than a number. Very manipulative management. Will tell you anything. Also, their landscaping is atrocious. Office park sterilized stuff. Pick from a whopping variety of three plants. Plant in a triangle. Mow blow and go. Fix irrigation for grass no one steps on or looks at. Bad for environment.

    Advice to Management

I would advise the management to self-reflect and ask themselves if this is really where they saw themselves when they were children.

I worked at Brickman full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Good working hours for the week

    Cons

A lot of drama and a lot of problems within the company with workers. They hire and fire a lot. They promise raises and don't deliver.

    Advice to Management

Stop hiring and firing people and then hiring them back the next season just to fire them again.

I worked at Brickman full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Some decent employees at lower levels

    Cons

Upper "management" does NOTHING but place blame on their "underlings". Horrible work environment unless you're prepared to have your head stuck up someones backside on a daily basis. Upper "management" has little to no clue about real world issues in the landscape/irrigation world... mostly a bunch of glorified pencil pushers.

    Advice to Management

Get your heads out of your stink-holes. Stop attempting to surround yourselves with boot licking yes-men, and allow your employees to actually do their jobs without the micro-management. Listen to those with MORE EXPERIENCE in the landscape/irrigation world than you.

I have been working at Brickman

    Pros

Benefits for salary employees were great. Trucks, tools, equipment and PPE were all top of the line. Properties were provided with the highest quality plants and products. Most properties were of grand stature and they were a pleasure to work on.

    Cons

Low salaries for experienced and educated employees. Promises of promotion that never escalated. Obvious "Boys Club" in management was very discriminatory against others.

    Advice to Management

Pay close attention to management. Many managers are preoccupied with manipulating numbers and have loss touch with the clients and the very people who do the work for them.
