I worked at Brightside Academy full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

One other teacher there was amazing and actually taught the children. Other than that there are no pros to say.

    Cons

Management was a disaster. Always sitting in the office not caring. Teachers always out of ratio. Kids had no discipline and when you needed help with a problem child, management didn't care. Other teachers were so awful, never taught. Treated other teachers like crap. Saw some sleeping on the job. Absolutely the worst place I worked. And when corporate was told, everything was swept under the rug.

    Advice to Management

Get your head out of your butt and do your job.

I have been working at Brightside Academy full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Amazing children. Freedom to do as you wish.

    Cons

"Freedom to do as you wish"- is exactly that. Those in higher management positions don't have the time or care to pay even the littlest bit of attention to any of their employees- therefore MANY staff get away with everything.
Laws, Regulations, and standards are NOT enforced. EVER.
The only importance to this company is to fill all classrooms to OVER maximum capacity. That's it.
Any and every child is enrolled. And the child is permitted to start immediately- most of the time without the proper paper work being completed.
The major amount of stress experienced daily is NOT worth it. The amount of negativity expressed by majority of the staff is overwhelming.
NO ROOM FOR GROWTH. AT ALL.
Quantity over Quality is the ONLY motto at Brightside.

    Advice to Management

PAY ATTENTION!!!!!!! Your staff, families, and especially children are suffering!!!!!
If you would just step up and take the time to care about your staff, so much can change. For the better!!

I worked at Brightside Academy full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Most of the children and families enrolled in the academy are pretty incredible. They generally want to develop and learn.

    Cons

Poor management, on multiple levels. Unfortunately the management cares more about their bottom line than the children involved. The corporation is capitalizing on low income families (title 20) and shows no interest in enhancing the lives of the children involved. The teachers that stay are uneducated and unbearable.
The management is not very forgiving when it comes to medical/dental appointments.... I missed several appointments because of this.

    Advice to Management

I would recommend restructuring the district and facility directors, increasing salaries, and hiring teachers with degrees.

    Pros

The pros of Brightside is seeing the kids smiling faces every day.

    Cons

Hours are too long, staff is underpaid, raises were put on hold, a lot of cliques who are not opened to new staff, and too many changes in management.

I have been working at Brightside Academy (Less than a year)

    Pros

The kids are awesome and the other teachers are very nice. The plans for the company are good in theory but when put into effect it is not working.

    Cons

Where do I start? The students are bumped from room to room in order for teachers to be in ratio causing students to be in unfamiliar environments where they don't know the expectations and teachers to have to understand the student's behavior on the spot. There are too many students with behavior issues and nothing to be done about them. I've been cursed at, kicked, hit, punched, spit on and broken up more fights than I have ever seen in my life and all these students are still enrolled. If a teacher speaks up then they are repremanded for not being able to handle their classroom. If teachers are out other teachers are sent from their own classrooms where their students have to suffer to cover even if that's not their age group. Subs are rarely called and the ones that come don't want to come back. There is no real teaching happening here, especially in school age. There's no time to do a lesson after school age students finish homework and even if there is the students refuse to sit for it. When students act out management blames it on the teacher even when the problem is staring them right in the face. There is usually one teacher in a room and as long as ratio is being kept there won't be an assistant placed in regardless of any kind of special needs. If there is an emergency teachers have to hope someone is walking by at the right time. Even when classes are out of ratio management stays in the office and let the teachers fend for themselves. Employees, even ones with degrees, get very little pay and the benefits are outrageous. With the money left over teachers are expected to buy their own materials for their classrooms and lessons. Classrooms have very little materials in them and what they do have the students destroy. Students are not allowed to use technology. There are iPads in every classroom and yet students can't use any education apps and the classrooms that do have computers the children are not allowed to use. If students are on educational websites the teachers still get in trouble. Teachers are expected to keep their rooms clean, get their paperwork done, and keep their students supervised. If one of these things doesn't get done the teacher gets in trouble. Management is more worried about keeping the center maintained for state visits than keeping it maintained for their students and staff. They don't care about the children or their employees. They just care about getting stars and money. I came to Brightside to get experience and what I learned is what not to do.

    Advice to Management

Pay employees more money. Provide them with the materials they need to teach their lessons and keep the students entertained. Don't blame everything on the teachers. Don't give school age the short end of the stick, they are still Brightside students. Put assistant teachers in every room whether it's for help taking kids to the bathroom or having to watch the class when a student runs out of the classroom. Come out of the office once in a while and help the staff rather than just check ratio and leave or stop in and criticize. Upper level management: clean out some of your lower starred centers. The management in those centers don't even have the skills to manage a classroom let alone an entire school of teachers and students. Some of your centers need to be shut down and restarted from the ground up. Reevaluate some of your policies because it is very hard to stay in compliance because some are just ridiculous, for example older school age students are too old to be walked two feet to the bathroom and have to stand in the hallway just because one person needs to go. This is just an invitation for misbehavior. Most importantly come visit your centers. Don't go to analyze who's following the rules. Analyze what's actually happening. What rules do the students not want to follow? What do the classrooms need in order to better function. Talk to the students. Talk to the teachers. Don't just listen to management. Chances are they are just trying to save their own behinds. They don't have a front seat for what goes on every day. Brightside has the potential to be a great company. But it's about the kids, the teachers, and their happiness. It's not about the students and how much money their families can pay or how many stars you can get on a center.

I worked at Brightside Academy (More than a year)

    Pros

You get a paycheck every 2 weeks

    Cons

Classrooms are always out of ratios, always.

There is no respect whatsoever throughout the whole organization

If you are not apart of a clique then you are singled out and become a walking target

Barely get a lunch break and when you do take one, you are made to feel guilty because once again they are out of ratio

No cost of living increase or raises given to the folks that actually work. Raises are only given to corporate staff for a job not well done.

Teacher turnaround is high. Here today, gone tomorrow!

    Advice to Management

Learn to treat your staff with respect and maybe they won't leave.
