I worked at British Council full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Culture diversity; friendly and professional colleagues; good working environment supporting staff needs for family care

    Cons

Performance management and evaluation lacking transparency- especially for senior management teams

    Advice to Management

It would have been much better if SLT leaders contribute more to business development which generates actual monetary values rather than producing good photos for reports.

I worked at British Council full-time

    Pros

British Council is a extremely interesting organisation to work for. The scale of the organisation makes it fascinating. The organisation has a positive mission and does good work. Work life balance is very good. Very friendly place to work from a cultural perspective.

    Cons

Slow paced. Lack of engagement from other parts of the organisation when trying to move initiatives forward. Immature processes, particularly in HR. Decade long public sector pay cap means salaries below senior management levels are relatively uncompetitive even when compared with some other public sector bodies.

    Advice to Management

British Council does not know what it wants to be and has something of an identity crisis. It is too diffuse. In a modern business environment, this lack of focus is unsustainable.

I worked at British Council full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Good home work life Calm relaxed environment Good training

    Cons

Poor leadership in senior management Senior management are bullies Nasty office politics

    Advice to Management

The staff made the British Council not the senior managers, keep loosing your staff and the BC will eventually fail. Yo can not replace experience with someone with a pretty CV, promote form within.

I worked at British Council full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Pleasant office environment in a central location. Subsided canteen. Opportunities to travel widely. Interesting organisation. Easy to get away with not coming into the office very much at all and not doing any work. Plenty of people in my team I didn't see week to week and appeared to do next to no work. I can not exaggerate enough the number of cushy jobs. Personally, I don't really see this as a pro.

    Cons

Insecure FTC Poor management Poor leadership. Lots of people who have worked there for years and years who are under-qualified for technical jobs they are in. Complete lack of accountability for failure and waste. Line managed by day rate contractors. I had 6 line managers in under 2 years as they all left or were fired. Poorly run projects. Lack of consideration that people need job security - I would advise...

    Advice to Management

Good luck - without government money and protection I'm not sure where an organisation this inefficient goes.

I worked at British Council full-time

    Pros

Pros: Low number of working hours per week allowing v good work-life balance. Great salary in accordance with local living wage. Good transferrable experience/skill-set for CV and future job applications. Extensive opportunities to 'make your mark' and take on extra responsibilities at placement schools. Long holidays & extensive opportunities to travel. Overall, a great experience.

    Cons

Cons: Sometimes patchy communications with senior management Sometimes delays in receiving pay (I think due to issues w. Argentine government internal system) Lack of choice over placement location

    Disapproves of CEO

    I worked at British Council

    Pros

Exposure to education institutes across the world

    Cons

Autocratic senior management, who have no respect for Juniors One of the worst paymaster in the industry Employees made to work an average of 12 hours everyday, with no overtime. Work load of three people given to one person Terrible work environment, worse than govt sector jobs.

    Advice to Management

Listen to employees concern and try tto resolve them, rather than exploiting people.

I worked at British Council full-time

    Pros

The organisation does interesting work and some of the staff are friendly and have interesting backgrounds. Work life balance is generally very good for a company in Singapore.

    Cons

Outdated office and facilities, very uncompetitive performance bonus, culture of hiring senior management from overseas (the UK) rather than growing talent from within. Unfriendly academic staff

    Advice to Management

Invest in the IT and give staff a healthier annual bonus. Promote staff rather than forcing them to apply for more senior jobs as if from scratch.

I have been working at British Council for more than a year

    Pros

Salary ok, international environment, no much pressure at work in comparison with other companies, good reputation of the brand, opportunities to travel for some workers.

    Cons

Work in silos, senior management, often UK-appointed staff, benefit of better conditions and tend to be self-focused and hypocritical with local appointed staff. Wannabe profit-making company by selling expensive courses and exams with a charity dress and a quasi-governmental soul (that is being slow and formal). More job opportunities in low-cost countries and job-cuts in others....
