I worked at British Gas full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great career over a decade whilst working there. Under the regime of Phil Bentley (former MD), there was excellent growth, and that provided progression..
Good pension scheme, excellent company car options, healthcare plan, great colleagues

    Cons

Current culture of disregard for staff, cost cutting without thinking of actual consequence.. Current morale is very low at all levels including managerial.
Too much bureaucracy and internal politics, with processes created for the sake of them being there, and no actual benefit.. Input seems to be taken away from management team too..
Salary lower than competition, Manager bonus scheme seems to become harder to achieve in an attempt to cut costs

    Advice to Management

Remember the culture and people that made British Gas who they are today.. Put people before shareholders..

I worked at British Gas (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Provides the basis for development that supports both individual and team effort through continuous profession development and training.

    Cons

Retention of less staff and focuses more on outsourcing workforce...albeit fulfilling their corporate social responsibilities through same effort!

I have been working at British Gas full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    Great benefits :-
6 months full paid maternity, 3 months SMP, 3 months no pay
    Up to 16% annual bonus
Option to buy more holiday up to max 30 days

    Cons

    Low salaries
Not much career progression or development

    Advice to Management

Invest more money in your people and in knowledge retention - making thousands of people redundant might save you some money but it makes people miserable, you lose customers and in the long term things start falling apart

I have been working at British Gas full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The training is good and the people I work with are fantastic. The benefits plus is good too. They offer good maternity, sick and dependency pay too. Work/Life balance is always good too.

    Cons

No progression, lack of communication from the hierarchy, some business decisions are awful and lack of morale in the workplace. Losing customers at an alarming pace and piling too much work on Team Leaders which prevents them from spending time with their teams.

    Advice to Management

Management above Team Leaders levels need to put the staff first sometimes rather than it always being about the customers/business needs. If you treat the staff well, the business needs and customers will come with that.

Fair salary good people to work with

    Cons

Unsociable hours.hard to get time off. Very much if your face fits you get a good bonus. Manageds wont listen if you raise an issue. Managers wont ever challenge back on a business decision. They go along witb all decisions even thkugh they silently disagree. The workers at the sharp end of the business are never consulted or involved in a decision, even though the business sag the do. Decisiobs based on information provued by over paid analysts.

    Advice to Management

Start listenibg to your staff. There is a lot of experisnce out tbere with some good ideas. Get your head out of ths clouds befide we all leave. You know your attrtion rates are high how about finding out why
