I worked at British Gas full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great career over a decade whilst working there. Under the regime of Phil Bentley (former MD), there was excellent growth, and that provided progression..
Good pension scheme, excellent company car options, healthcare plan, great colleagues

    Cons

Current culture of disregard for staff, cost cutting without thinking of actual consequence.. Current morale is very low at all levels including managerial.
Too much bureaucracy and internal politics, with processes created for the sake of them being there, and no actual benefit.. Input seems to be taken away from management team too..
Salary lower than competition, Manager bonus scheme seems to become harder to achieve in an attempt to cut costs

    Advice to Management

Remember the culture and people that made British Gas who they are today.. Put people before shareholders..

Retention of less staff and focuses more on outsourcing workforce...albeit fulfilling their corporate social responsibilities through same effort!

People are all lovely - and there are lots of graduates who inject some fun youth into the company.
Big focus on development - rarely say no to an opportunity that will help you improve
Salaries are not bad and great benefits

    Cons

Staines is not a nice place to work - especially if you are under 30 and living in London
No progression - unless someone leaves!

    Advice to Management

I have been working at British Gas full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Salary and choice of benefits is still good though the benefits package has been reduced and choice diluted over last 12months. On the whole fantastic support from your Team Leaders.

    Cons

Lack of communication between higher management and staff at other levels, frequent changes of KPIs, one minute it’s customer centric the next it’s get them on and off the phone as fast as you can . Distinct lack of actual progression they are fine with you doing the jobs on secondment when they don’t have to pay extra but there’s no actual promotion takes place or extremely rarely

    Advice to Management

Make your mind up if you’re putting the customer or sales first guys and stick to it !
