I have been working at British Gas full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Great work life balance at head office functions - Staines and Windsor Lots of autonomy Good benefits and salary if you join externally Good people

    Cons

Poor senior leadership, a lot of them hide from their staff Greedy corporate - take too much profit from legacy customers Old school senior managers stuck in middle / senior management on huge salaries - they couldn't get a role externally but stumble by until they "get found out" A major case of the emperors news clothes with the current strategy

    Advice to Management

Remember there is an energy business to run Stop hiding from your middle managers Work out how to use connected

I worked at British Gas full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Relaxed but professional environment. Good benefits. Gym and staff restaurant on site.

    Cons

Still some 'hero' rather than team culture in IT delivery

    Advice to Management

There is some under utilisation of skills and sone very top down decision making. Encourage the best in people and support professional training plans and career development.

I have been working at British Gas full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Good salary, good benefits... (Qdos) good shifts in the summer, horrendous in the winter, some good engineers work here. Struggling to find anymore pros

    Cons

British Gas are only interested in sales, as soon as you get into a customers house they expect you to flog something, preferably a Hive. It's sales 1st then repair the appliance 2nd. Obviously some customers have had enough with 400k leaving in the first 6 months of this year. It's not just the customers who have had enough though, the bully boy techniques and micromanagement have taken a toll on the work force too, as many engineers have left this year (including myself at the end of the year) the GMB union don't care and don't do anything, too much in BG's pocket. It's a well paid job but simply isn't worth the stress. Such a shame as it used to be a great place to work. Now it's just toxic. Counting down the days to when I leave.

    Advice to Management

Stop with the micromanagement, treat employees as people and not money making drones. Communication is very poor, morale rock bottom, the management don't realise as they are so out of touch. Greedy shareholders are ruining BG and it's brand.

I have been working at British Gas full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Amazing Colleagues Good Salary for the role and level Good Benefits Package

    Cons

Company perceived as old, expensive and outdtaed Managment out of touch with reality of lower level roles Forced to book holiday time over a year in advance Stupidly poor work/life balance for those in a call center roll

    Advice to Management

Stop trying to change what isnt broken, stop trying to hold staff pay rises to ransom by blackmailing them with forced contract changes.

I have been working at British Gas full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Flexible working at some junior and most senior levels, decent pay, good benefits package (multiple share schemes), great learning environment

    Cons

Can be somewhat bureaucratic due to size and multiple layers of management, too much emphasis on management levels rather than indivudial talent, pay could be more competitive

    Advice to Management

Focus less on management levels and more on individual talent; regardless of level

I worked at British Gas full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Good Pay, Good Benefits, some good people to work with

    Cons

Difficult to get learning opportunities, A lot of change 'trying' to make things better - systems, processes etc. but fail with follow through and communication fails between departments, you really feel like a number at times

    Advice to Management

Better follow through and communication needed, more employee engagement and recognition. Need to really work on processes when implementing change as things really don't feel very well thought out.

    I worked at British Gas

    Pros

Good benefits such as Shares Save (although the share price has plummeted!) Can progress if your in the right junior role and show promise.

    Cons

Archaic processes and culture. Change takes forever with so much red tape and ambiguity. Senior leaders are invisible so getting your voice really heard is impossible. Depending on business area managers are dinosaurs. Generally a boring and grey culture across the business. Nothing like a modern culture. HQs are hush environments with either very moody people or very pretentious people. Restructures constantly so company is seemingly never clear on its direction. Everyone in BG knows it goes in cycles so you end up doing what you did two years ago before they changed it! Groundhog Day!! Values are not trust. Just words made up by brand. Expected that people work all hours as jobs are constantly cut so those left become busier.

    Advice to Management

Cut out the deadwood. Change the culture. think about how modern companies are thriving and aspire to be like that. Not the stuffy corporate atmosphere that has seem the value of the company nose dive.
