I have been working at Brookdale Senior Living full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Management is Supportive and encouraging, with feedback given in a productive way. Residents are wonderful and they have many activities to choose from, thanks to a great activities director.

    Cons

Short staffed. Management continually snowed by interview candidates. Recently hired staff are surly and rude to residents and coworkers. Very "know it all" attitude that is off putting to co-workers and residents. Management can be out of touch with staff on the STNA level. Mgmt. relies on staff members to police each other, rather than a supervisor or work lead, causing animosity between co-workers.

    Advice to Management

You give great feedback when you are aware of what is happening on the STNA level. Stop relying on your staff to report each other, it is a poor system and does not work. Yes, sometimes it is necessary for something to be reported; however, the majority of the time, a supervisor or work lead needs to be stopping the behavior before it starts. That NEVER happens at Brookdale, in Skilled Nursing. Excellent STNA's have stopped reporting anything they see because of retaliation and animosity between staff members. It's expected of a supervisor or work lead because it is their responsibility. Managing by relying on co-workers to tell on each other is a recipe for disaster even if what is being reported is legitimate. There are currently 3 excellent STNA's on second shift actively seeking to transfer or leave Brookdale all together due to the poor choices in new staff and the way that you rely on staff members to police eachother, causing animosity and retaliation. You have a mess to clean up and you aren't even aware of it.

I have been working at Brookdale Senior Living full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Opportunities to advance. Education reimbursement options. Awesome coworkers and residents. Good schedule. Management does care about associates and residents.

    Cons

Budget cuts. Pay is lower than industry average. Lots of paper compliance.

    Advice to Management

Consider doing more market pay analysis. We are losing great people due to lower pay. Give associates more opportunities to voice opinions and concerns in a safe environment. Reward strong associates more for great performance. Annual raises are barely cost of living increase.

I have been working at Brookdale Senior Living full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Supportive staff and management. Great team work. Always room for promotion within the company.

    Cons

Corporate often doesn't see every building is unique and needs different support.

    Advice to Management

Offer raises before staff is ready to quit. Showing floor staff that they are valued will cut down on overturn and boost employee retention. Big picture - it will cut down on cost of foundations training , background checks, pre employment drug testing etc. Often just for .50-$1 more and hr.
