I have been working at Brookdale Senior Living full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The connections made with residents of the community are meaningful. The communities mission and vision are excellent and could lead to a great work environment.

    Cons

Understaffed, under qualified caregivers, overworked employees. Although the mission and vision are wonderful it is impossible to be in line with it due to staffing issues and increased demands on staff. staff moral is very low.

    Advice to Management

Higher up management needs to be more involved with what goes on at a community level. Understaffed communities need to have less pressure to avoid overtime.

    Pros

+Allowed me to work part time while in school. Most facilities could not offer that option

    Cons

-Employee turnover rate is still high
-Certain employees are either incompetent or lazy

    Advice to Management

Help the employees the same way you help family members of the residents.

    Pros

    The resident's and their families.

    Cons

    Advice to Management

Invest in your long term employees, you know the ones who stick around over years and years of changes and company buyouts. Offer better insurance or give more than one option

I worked at Brookdale Senior Living full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

About the only good thing about working for Brookdale was meeting the elderly folk that lived in the communities. We had a Polish lady in one of my communities

    Cons

Rather crappy pay for what was expected of us. I had to transfer from one facility to another because the Executive Director at my first facility didn't like that I'd called them on bad practices in the memory care unit and I wasn't allowed to get my full time hours. Second facility I worked at had three floors and only 2 staff overnight, we were expected to attempt getting folks out if there was a fire(fat chance since most of them needed 2 people to get them out of the bed if they required assistance and almost all of those were on the second and third floors). No nurse on duty in the facility in the assisted living location overnight. Christmas bonuses were always promised but of my three Christmases with the company, the first one was on a barely useful gift card (no magnetic strip on the Walmart card so couldn't even use it at the Walmart gas pumps), the second one didn't get given to me until January and the third one was a myth (they collected the funds but we never got our bonuses). At one point in time I was expected to work 3 floors and 50 residents overnight by myself, while handling 12 loads of laundry with only 2 working washers and 2 working dryers - and an extremely violent resident. Often times we had to "borrow" depends and bed pads from residents for other residents because our higher ups weren't ordering enough of the correct sizes for our residents. We often ran out of gloves too. We rarely had enough silverware to set the dining room up for the morning service and have enough to prep them for a full lunch service as well, coffee mugs and saucers often ran out before we finished setting the tables. The water that was set out for the residents to drink from every day often looked tepid and disgusting, and at the second location the Chef couldn't spell easy words, and the kitchen was disgusting.

To put it mildly, don't work here. It's a bloody mess. I took a multiple dollar pay cut to get away from Brookdale, and I don't regret it at all.

    Advice to Management

Actually care about both the residents and your employees, instead of just the bottom line, and it might actually make your profits higher.
