Great job if you have never made more than $35,000

May 22, 2015 - Sales and Marketing Manager in Melbourne, FL

    Pros

Most frontline coworkers are truly motivated to take care of Seniors. Also, most Family Members were friendly and appreciative of the care Residents received.

    Cons

Micromanagement, too many meetings, webinars and conference calls. Limited time to actually get out and Market. Focus on activity not productivity with praise given for # of calls made vs. # of monthly Move Ins. Oh, and you will be held accountable for Move Outs (including Deaths) and written up if you have negative net monthly growth even if you have 6 or seven monthly Move Ins. Worship the almighty dollar, no overtime sent home after 40 hours each week, even when there was valid Sales related work to be done. If you would like to be a telemarketer most of your day and have never made more than $35K this might be for you. Sales Managers located a few miles away were paid differing amounts of Salary ranging from $42K to $50 based on how much Management thought they would accept.

Last company I want to work for

    Pros

The residents and their families. They appreciate what you do and want to see you succeed. The other department heads will support your success because you all need to work together.

    Cons

It's still very 9-5. They haven't jumped on the band wagon of letting you work flexible hours especially if you are not a shift employee on the floor. More flexible work hours would make it so much better.

    Sales Manager

    Pros

Well maintained communities. Friendly staff. Fantastic residents that make work enjoyable.

    Cons

Regional team is unrealistic. Told to have at least 4 move ins a month. In a community like assisted living it's and easy task. Selling independent living is a completely different element. It's not need driven at all so it's a much longer process. Regional has the mentality that everyone is replaceable. I am a top seller and have several awards yet none of that matters. Executive directors are uneducated. Most without degrees that like to lead with power instead of actual leadership. More of who you know to move up. Bonus structure is pathetic and does not factor how hard or long it takes to move someone into a community.

    Sales Manager

    Pros

Large, national company, health benefits, potential to move up, stability, helping seniors, some training, different kinds of communities.

    Cons

Company has become too big. Their slogan is to take care of the residents and the bottom line takes care of itself. Like most large companies the execs make all the money. Caregivers not paid enough for what they do. Some communities say there are a lot of activities for seniors but there really is not...visit on a weekend or off hours to see true picture. Not all communities have backup activity people when the main one is sick or on vacation. Sales people expected to work hourly but do a professional salaried position. Training insufficient for the job they expect. Marketing philosophy outdated.

    Sales and Marketing Manager

    Pros

The residents become your extended family. Someone with little to NO experience in sales, can easily transition into this position. The sales management position is pre-mapped and tasked orientated.

    Cons

Unfortunately, the Executive Director will make or break a community. If you end up with a bad ED, the corporate wheels take a long time to catch up and make changes. I have been in sales most of my career and I can truly say, this is NOT a sales position. There is a small amount of business development that is involved; however, if your ED isn't supportive, your efforts are futile. Sadly, I feel sure that Brookdale's culture isn't reflected in many of it's communities. The position is HEAVILY micromanaged and completely metrics driven. Meaning, you can easily be task orientated without actually selling! Had I come onboard in a different community and under different leadership, I think I would be much happier.

Hostile work environment with way too much pressure.

Mar 12, 2016 - Regional Sales and Marketing Manager in Portland, OR

    Pros

Most of the care staff are very dedicated to Resident care, too bad Administrator isnt!!

    Cons

I have never worked in such a disorganized Corp environment in my 40 years in Management. They will threaten you with your job if you have a couple months of low numbers. In this business it is very common for slow months. Geographical locations play a huge role in marketing structures and the flow of a "need based business". Competition is rampid with much smaller and family owned ALF. Regional Operations will compare your "Community" to others that are much smaller or larger which ever the case may be and expect you to perform the same way! Completely out of touch with Reality! If they had people with REAL education degrees in Sales and Marketing, Brookdale would be way more successful! This company will fold within 2 more years if they don't get it together!

Brookdale/Emeritus merge=BIG MISTAKE It's been 3 years and getting worse by the day.

    Pros

Benefits, free lunch, had some really great team 'on the ground' members, and enjoyed the friendships made with our residents.

    Cons

Lower than average pay, regional support is nil. Constant rate increases, pricing themselves right out of their local markets. $5 per day is not realistic to feed each of your residents.

Focus on actual residents, not how many suites will be secured by end of the month!

    Pros

Great team work with commuity leadership; great commission/bonus structure; caregivers are very helpful and friendly

    Cons

Company lost focus on the residents, and more on revenue. I felt I became more of a number than an associate. I was called numerous times after hours and on the weekends from my regional, when it could have waited until the next busiess day.
