I worked at Brooklyn College part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The institution offers Flexible Schedule, CA's go though a lot of management training and supervised training. They do receive discounts on and off campus and it's a great way to to represent the college.

    Cons

There are Limited promotional opportunities as CA's are PT not FT. As this is part of CUNY there is little or no Medical Coverage available and off course the pay sucks.

    Advice to Management

Since the turnover rate of this position is so high, CA's are under a lot of pressure to perform than expected. The Management should try to promote Part Time CA's to either Full Time or give them an opportunity to move into different offices and departments.

    Pros

The people working are really quite nice, they don't ask too much of you as an adjunct, and are understanding. The students aren't too terrible, as they all know the deal. Also the campus is quite beautiful.

    Cons

Sometimes things would get disorganized. There was no direct deposit of paychecks, which wasn't really nice. The outlying areas around the campus are not very nice. Low income neighborhood that doesn't have much in the way of storefronts.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you're doing. I never felt unsure of what I was supposed to be doing. However institution of a more accessible paycheck system would be quite nice.

I have been working at Brooklyn College full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Comfortable work environment, very lax, great benefits, great location, doesn't punish laziness/ineptitude like private sector would, nice holiday parties & decent employee appreciation days

    Cons

Lackluster pay, substantial delay on initial paychecks, can get too comfortable at one position & watch your life fly by, as such it's difficult to move up or get a promotion as new positions only open if someone gets another job, retires, or dies.

    Advice to Management

Not much advice that I could give that i'd expect them to actually consider, much less act upon. It is what it is, just show up and do your job and you'll thrive.
