I have been working at Broome Community College part-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Excellent work/life balance, and because of that good pay for what you do. Your work as an instructor here is dependent on your department, and so is your enjoyment.

    Cons

Toxic work environments abound on this campus; certain bad actors are grandfathered in and must be avoided or tolerated. People tend to be melodramatic, and have a hard time getting along, which leaves it up to others to negotiate a ceasefire among them. For example, in the LAD (Learning Assistance Center), the co-Chairs often have to get the secretaries to stop creating things to fight each other and others over.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at Broome Community College full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Some faculty/staff are dedicated, many are not

    Cons

The institution has become revenue driven and left academics to chance. Strong academics used to be the hallmark of BCC but now the focus is just maintaining enrollment and saving jobs; that is the reason this faculty member retired.

Supportive faculty who are willing to provide assistance.

    Cons

    Neutral Outlook

I have been working at Broome Community College for more than a year

    Pros

Quiet computer lab in the Decker Building for Health Sciences. Lots of time to study, very little actual "work". Good basic working knowledge of how to access programs & assist students. Very flexible schedule. Holidays and weekends are always off!

    Cons

Minimum wage, limited hours -- but considering that you will be filling paper in a printer and occasionally assisting students in basic computer skills -- it's a cake walk. Enjoy it!
