I have been working at Broward County Health Department full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Benefits are great, especially if SES/career service. Co-workers are great. Management does not put up with lazy or incompetent people (see writers of negative reviews below). Senior management very involved in every aspect of operations.

    Cons

State system does not allow for merit pay increase or COLAs. Only accross the board raises must pass Florida legislature which is heavily conservative (read: hates state workers, permits one raise every decade).

Really wish there was more I could say...

    Cons

Insultingly low wages, especially for college graduates.
OPS positions are a joke. No sick time accrued, No paid vacation time, No statue college tuition waiver!!!! You pretty much aren't eligible for anything besides health insurance and a paycheck for days you are physically at work...
If you decide to work with this organization beware and only apply for CS (Career Service) or SES (supervisory) positions!

    Advice to Management

More opportunities need to be given to the large population of young people who are devoting their time and dedication to the state of FL for pennies. From the outside looking in age seems to be a large determining factor in reference to placement within the organization.

    Pros

Your fellow co-workers make the office environment somewhat tolerable.

    Cons

It is a very uncomfortable place to be. Management is a joke. They do not treat their employees with professionalism, all employees are looked down as if inferior, and their attitude towards their employees is degrading and insulting. The moral has been sucked out of this place. It is awful. Ive never seen so many people trying to leave a place of work.

    Pros

Health benefits and the many nice people I have met during my employment.

    Cons

As many previous reviewers pointed out, the nepotism at the Broward County Health Department goes beyond; which is funny because one of the first things enforced during a training session for new employees (and subsequent yearly training) is that any kind of nepotism is an absolute no,no! Blatant changes to job postings (they'll even pull it from PeopleFirst to make the changes) to suit an individual they want on board (from outside the agency and within) is the norm. I have seen many hard working people leave before they are asked to "resign" due to upper management's bully-style tactics to get what they want. "Fear and intimidation" is upper managements m.o. It's a sad state of affairs. Shame on you Broward County Health Department and shame on the State of Florida for letting it continue.

    Advice to Management

They don't take advice because they don't care.

    Pros

Helping customers, getting along with co-workers, and being on time.

    Cons

Over flow of the clinic, and short staff.

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at Broward County Health Department full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Paycheck every 2 weeks and benefits. Some people who work here are genuinely interested in others and doing a good job.

    Cons

Just about everything else. Administration is corrupt as far as only caring about themselves. They manipulate facts to use against others as they see fit and to benefit themselves. Abuse of power abounds. No matter how hard you work or how well you do your job, you are not safe from harassment and the constant threat of termination. Many skeletons in the closets here. A cult-like environment. No advancement unless you are in the inner circle.

    Advice to Management

Start treating others the way YOU would want to be treated. You should care about the employees here and be a good role model or you should leave and take all of your followers with you.

I have been working at Broward County Health Department full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Medical Benefits for Career Service positions

    Cons

Senior Management are thugs that set a very negative hostile work environment. Middle management runs on backbiting, fear and finger pointing. Everyone walks around fearing for their job which compensation is beyond low for standards of living. The Senior management makes their $100,000.00 but deny the workers a fair wage. Most front line staff must work two or more jobs to live. This is considered normal to the management. There are two sets of rules of employment; those for the chosen and those for what senior management deem peons. After the latest round of firings it be clear racism and nepotism is used to make the decisions. An employee will be told who they can and can't talk to within the agency and with outside organizations. Senior Management runs this place like a state agency, a state prison, and the employees are the inmates. Also in case of a disaster employees are required to work in the shelters. The employees that must work two jobs due to the low wages paid to them must leave their families to work. Ask the Director where she will be during a disaster? This woman and her senior management seem to enjoy firing people. The only way to get ahead in this agency is to be Hispanic, a male and accept the rules set forth by the director.

    Advice to Management

Seek training in ethics and morals
