I worked at Broward County part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The benefits of working for the county are numerous. There are benefits (when full-time.) There is a retirement package (after many years.)

    Cons

The part-time work does not give any benefits. Unfortunately there is no job security either. There is also a limitation on the number of hours worked weekly.

I worked at Broward County full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Good starter position
    Benefits are decent but diminishing
Virtually unlimited budget for new technology testing
Majority of employees are enjoyable to work with

    Cons

There are some bad eggs within the organization that contributed to the department losing some of its most talented employees. There was a group of employees that liked to gossip about other non-participating colleagues during their lunch breaks. Immaturity is the norm so be ready to participate in the game or be shunned as an outcast. Widespread promotion of incompetence was rampant and people who brown-nosed had positions with absurd titles made for them. This is the only way to actually get a raise since Broward County froze yearly increases some 15 years ago. Employees that had no leadership skills were assigned to manage those that actually knew how to lead. Some higher level Analysts were becoming stale in their skill-sets, having set the whole department back about 20 years in terms of technology. The policies were antiquated and hourly employees were treated like cattle instead of people. The directors and managers were always on vacation that never seemed to come out of their accrued PTO banks. Human Resources was out to screw employees over instead of doing their real job and leadership was clueless to tell them to back off. They wasted taxpayer and airline revenue on consultants because they were too lazy to do the work on their own. This led to a skills gap and a dependency on vendors. The parent IT department for the County (ETS) was full of arrogant and narrow-minded employees alike. They were even duller in comparison to personality than Aviation was. It was a nightmare having to deal with them as they did not like Aviation being a separate entity from them.

    Advice to Management

Learn how to hire IT professionals that have a personality to go with it. Arrogance and people who think they know it all do not fit that profile. Don't be intimidated by fresh talent that does not want to wait 10 years to be move up the ranks. Technology is too dynamic for that! Get out of the Stone Age when it comes to work ethic as well!

    Pros

Paid time off and holiday pay.

    Cons

Political and moving up is not easy

    Advice to Management

If possible hire people from within the division, staff who has been there for years would like to advance and often many qualified people are eager to move up!

I worked at Broward County (Less than a year)

    Pros

The environment at the Anne Kolb Nature Center was one of dynamism and interactiveness. I was able to learn about the surrounding ecosystem and all its parts - something that I would not have come to know had I not worked at the center (particularly because I am a business student).

    Cons

The average work day could be quite slow, there was not often a lot to do - other than read and learn about the ecosystem. When there were no visiting groups, I often found myself looking for ways to spend the time, which was not particularly invigorating.

    Advice to Management

Create a solidified, defined, and actionable agenda for interns in the future - with an appropriate list of work and daily responsibilities.

    Pros

The benefits are VErY good, there is a lot of training and opportunities for professional growth

    Cons

Bureaucracy, some people are not motivated and demotivate others. Population that one works with is in extreme need and all of their needs cannot be met in one place, which causes them to be angry and act with frustration

    Advice to Management

Increase of services, more sympathy, empathy and understanding toward the population that is being served.

I worked at Broward County part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Easy first job part time, room to grow if your manager like you. 3% pay increase if the county is doing good at end of fiscal year, half off passes. Meets new people. Campers are awesome you see all sorts of people.

    Cons

As a part time you always work on holidays, sometimes taking over full timer jobs. Having to finish or do all of the full timers job because you are there. A lot of park manager play favorites and give seniority if you been there a long time. Sometimes being alone with a lot of money. If you are there for a long time or they like you they allow you to be late without a problem but if you are new you will be made an example.

    Advice to Management

Managers tend to overuse their part timers, sometimes i've seen two guys clean a 175.2 acres park a lot Pick sticking large amount of garbage while the rest 8 to 10 employees "landscape" or "maintain fields" while the park remains dirty, with garbage everywhere no one bother to pick but the weekend par timers, Brian piccolo is the dirtiest park.

I have been working at Broward County full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Decent benefits package, good work life balance, opportunities to move up or move to different positions within the organization, free parking.

    Cons

Can be boring and non challenging, some very bad managers in positions of power that treat their employees badly. Morale is not very high. Very political culture leading to disingenuous actions by management.

    Advice to Management

Practice what you preach, hypocrisy leads to poor morale. Organization needs to do a better job of working with employees to define and promote career paths.

    Pros

Good benefits, steady employment, good working conditions in the past.

    Cons

Poor management, lack of leadership, little or no pay increases, no chance for advancement unless you are part of the good ol' boy network.

    Advice to Management

Upper management: quite hiring managers that were failures & under performers in their last positions. Morale is poor and leads to the loss of good people.
