I have been working at Broward County Schools full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Professional Development and opportunities for self development. No two days are the same.

    Cons

The salary is horrible. Even at the district level you’re payed a teacher salary.

    Advice to Management

Create pathways for leaders that fall outside of school based experience. Not everyone wants to be a principal.

I have been working at Broward County Schools full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

You can choose the professional development workshops you want to attend.

    Cons

Administration may decide that they don't want you to attend professional development workshops. Principals block teachers from transferring to other schools. Some teachers always end up with all of the behavior students and the students that are academically struggling. Principals are only concerned with grades 3-5 and never give support to teachers in grades K-2.

    Advice to Management

District leaders and Superintendents need to put qualified and competent people in charge of schools.

I worked at Broward County Schools full-time

    Pros

Large school district has lots of opportunities if you can get them Plenty of professional development options

    Cons

So big it doesn't always feel like the people in charge and the people who aren't are working for the same organization or even in the same region Schools can be "clique-y" Budgets are oddly distributed

    Advice to Management

Ensure all schools have what they need to function Get all teachers on board, not just with surface-level cheerleading functions, but by listening to their feedback and making changes where appropriate

I have been working at Broward County Schools for more than 10 years

    Pros

I have been fortunate to work with an amazing faculty for over a decade. Everyone is extremely cooperative and supportive. There have been many opportunities for professional development.

    Cons

The budget often doesn't allow elective classes to be offered that students would like, even when there are qualified teachers available.

I have been working at Broward County Schools full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Never ending opportunities to learn. You get to attend courses for professional development and you get compensated for doing so.

    Cons

Salary is too low for the amount of work and my 7 years of experience. Though Health benefits are free to employees, the cost to add dependents is so high that you can't afford it.

I worked at Broward County Schools full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

The salaries are competitive and they offer top level professional development. Because of the number of schools, it is not too difficult to transfer if you are not satisfied with your position, whether it is because of the administration or location.

    Cons

Very demanding because of state requirements to meet the standards, student behavior can be extremely challenging, diverse student population, absolutely exhausting and draining. Better have a lot of energy. The teacher union is struggling to negotiate improvement (but at least there is a Union.) They have eliminated or severely reduced full time jobs for media specialists, art teachers and music teachers. Not much... in the way of the arts. If you are flexible and ready to learn new skills, you can maintain a job otherwise you may be phased out. I moved to another district.
