I worked at Brown Gibbons Lang as an intern

    Pros

Offers summer analysts hands-on exposure to live deals and a very holistic view of the end-to-end M&A process. Strong deal flow and lean teams allow for the ability to take on more responsibility. Work alongside smart, diligent, and fun people as well as significant access to senior bankers. Firm sponsors events throughout the summer to encourage the collegial nature of the office.

    Cons

Hours are industry average - very manageable.

    Advice to Management

Work to offer more formal feedback throughout the course of the summer.

I have been working at Brown Gibbons Lang full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great place to work. The team has one of the longest track records in boutique middle market M&A advisory work. You will work on interesting deals and well position yourself for a future career in M&A based on the firm's reputation with private equity firms and company executives.

    Cons

Like all ibanking firms, employees are expected quickly to pull their weight for the high pay packages at the firm and that are common throughout the industry.

    Advice to Management

Keep growing and additing exceptional employees that are passionate about helping BGL's clients achieve their goals.

I worked at Brown Gibbons Lang full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Solid deal flow and somewhat reputable name in the middle market. Great foot in the door in investment banking. Pay is comparable and plenty of opportunity to move up the ranks.

    Cons

Incredible lack of quality control on most deals; it was hard to believe the quantity and materiality of errors that made their way into clients' hands - numbers not tying, models not balancing, unintentional circular references, horrible grammar.. the list goes on. If you're trying to learn, work here and you'll learn how not to do it. Culture >> Extremely unprofessional and immature environment, identical to a frat house.

    Advice to Management

    Don't know where to start...

    Pros

BGL is a great environment to work in. It's a very collegial culture and guys are all very easy to get along with. The learning experience is great. The deal teams are fairly lean, thus you really have an opportunity to prove yourself. The senior bankers are knowledgeable individuals and really encourage you to step up and take on more responsibility.

    Cons

The only real downside of working at BGL is perhaps that the pay is a little lower than industry norm. Also, the firm does not seem to be very well known and it doesn't have a level of prestige if that sort of thing matters to you.

    Advice to Management

The only advice would be to expand the Chicago office further and to create a stronger brand name in the industry.

"Brown Gibbons Lang, why bulge bracket hours?"

    Pros

Work experience in the middle market. They have a training program similar to other banks. You will have direct experience with the senior level people as well as attendance in management meetings and pitches.

    Cons

Even though this is a boutique bank, the hours are long. I think the learning experience varies from person to person. I think the training is a little weak as well as the people helping you rise through the ranks. Also the brand name is lacking. It is going to be difficult to compete against other established middle market banks.

    Advice to Management

I think you get what you pay for. The loyalty for the company diminishes come bonus time.
