    Pros

The products are high-tech instrumentation, which offers a variety of interesting and challenging problems to work on. The site I worked at (near Santa Barbara, CA) builds Atomic Force Microscopes, which consist of advanced electro-mechanical nano-positioning systems, low noise analog and mixed-signal electronics, and fairly complex software. So a lot of opportunity to learn.

    Cons

Management has a really hard time focusing, which means a constant stream of conflicting priorities.
Many of the systems are based on aging platforms (older DSPs / FPGAs, bloated and unmaintainable application codebase).
In recent years many of the better engineers have left, but there are still good people there as well.

    Advice to Management

Focus, stop trying to do everything. You haven't committed the budget, so you'll just have to pick and choose what you focus on.

I worked at Bruker full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Have offices in MA, CA and some other locations. Can internal transfer if need to move to another location for family or other reasons.

    Cons

Management is very hubris. Make bad decisions and don't listen to suggestions. And Bruker believes fear management. Warning letters are often for sales people. The turnover for sales force is too often.

    Advice to Management

Stop being so arrogant! CEO should act like a business man instead of treating this company like his toy and keep some products which keep losing money for companies for years just because he has a soft spot for that product.

I have been working at Bruker full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Great people some interesting projects

    Cons

Too many old product lines supported. Projects are started and later put on hold. Project planning is often poorly managed. Bruker designs, builds and tests high end microscopes yet there are more staff in HR than in manufacturing engineering.
5 current HR staff offer very little in terms of employee support.

    Advice to Management

Senior management need to become more engaged with day to day issues at Bruker SB. Quarterly visits are insufficient. Your poor project planning should not be an excuse for mandatory forced vacations and layoffs. This ship needs a new compass.

I worked at Bruker as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

The product lines were interesting and there were a lot of very talented and great people to work with.
Experience with the product lines is helpful throughout several industries, including chemical, medical, biotech, forensic science....etc.

    Cons

Lack of employee development. Future outlook for business sector was not good, there is one major player, and it's very difficult to compete with them. It was a David vs. Goliath situation. The endeavor was highly likely to fail from the beginning.

    Advice to Management

Look into market possibilities and the competition before embarking on a quest that is so likely to fail.

    I worked at Bruker full-time

    Pros

    - A lot of nice people
    - Decent benefits
    - Good work/life balance
    - Friendly environment

    Cons

    - Poor planning of projects. Frequently, a project is set as a yearly goal, without a clear definition of the deliverable, and without truly consulting the people directly responsible for the project's implementation.
    - Products are often rushed to meet self-imposed deadlines, and quality usually suffers.
    - The engineering team is gradually shrinking, and management seems content. A lot of outsourcing plans. Long-term view for engineers at the division seems a bit bleak, and the morale is not particularly good.
    - Hard to keep up with market pay if you start out on the lower end of the career ladder. Promotions are often a gamble in terms of availability and amount, even though your managers fully approve.
    - Promotions for technical roles are not meaningful aside from pay. No clear responsibility/career growth path if you're an engineer.

    Advice to Management

    - Do a better job planning your big projects and consequently setting them as goals. Ask the people scheduled to implement them to properly estimate the work, and clearly define what you expect to be delivered.
    - Laying off engineering staff when the company is doing okay and being content with a low headcount does not send a good message. When an engineering company does not seem to care about the engineers... Use your imagination.
    - Be more open. If you don't say anything about the negative things going on, it does not make them go away, but instead feeds the rumor mill.
    - Focus on quality instead of rushing things to meet artificially imposed deadlines.
