I worked at Buffalo State College part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Students were engaged and wanted to get the most out of the courses that I taught. I worked with a special cohort; thus, I had a chance to teach many of the same students twice, in 2 different courses.

    Cons

Since students worked full-time, elsewhere, throughout the day, as I did, they often arrived late because the parking situation is very challenging.

    Advice to Management

Hire adjuncts earlier so that they can be as well-prepared as possible. Allow them to have greater access to on-campus services such as photocopying, library access, cloud-based documents to share with students.

I worked at Buffalo State College part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The student atmosphere is encouraging and the library is at the tips of your fingers.

    Cons

The college writing program use to pay employees $15 per hour, but recently laid off all the workers and forced teachers to work in the writing center and the time worked is calculated as a "class". Teachers that are part one that were making $15 an hour PLUS teaching up to 3 classes were able to make a decent living. Now, they are forced into an even lower level of poverty while tuition rates are increasing and administration is making significant amounts of money.

    Advice to Management

Treat your employees how ou want to be treated. Pay them to do their job with a decent wage. Stop looking at the bottom line. We are talking about education not a business.

    Pros

The UUP union was exceptional. The department was very welcoming and supportive of their adjuncts. Even though I was only needed for the fall semester, I felt like I belonged. The salary listed was for 2 courses in the fall semester.

    Cons

Introductory courses have a very large attendance without a teaching or grading assistant. For an adjunct, grading 90-120 homework assignments, exams, and papers per course can sometimes means your hours to income ratio puts you below minimum wage. It's not fair to students or instructors to make adjunct choose between underpayment per hour or skimping on providing the best education possible.

    Advice to Management

If you can't raise the adjunct contract, at least provide a grading assistant to help several adjuncts at a time. It would be a great work-study opportunity as long as the student is not enrolled in the class.

I have been working at Buffalo State College full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Current technology, Is constantly growing and getting larger. Off on holidays , right near the center of the city so close to everything.

    Cons

No overtime, management is hit or miss. Pay increases are almost non existent, expect at most a 2% raise a year max, and most of the time nothing. Also you start at minimum wage.

    Advice to Management

Management tries to run too many departments at once, so cannot respond to difficulties too quickly which can slow down the pace of the office.

    Pros

Wonderful staff and colleagues, weekly assessments to review progress, treated with respect and loyalty. A wonderful place to work if you like working with computers and inputting data. (Which I do).

    Cons

The only con is that I had to leave! I had my son and had to become a stay-at-home mother while his father worked. I am now ready to rejoin to the workforce.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good work! I'd recommend this job to anyone looking for full-time to part-time data entry or administrative positions.

I have been working at Buffalo State College part-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Thanks to UUP, BSC provides full benefits to adjuncts teaching 6 credit hours or more. If you have had to take a job just because you needed to provide your family with health insurance, and not because you loved the work, then you understand just how much more we can focus on students once our family is covered.

    Cons

BSC has always been a place for me to learn and grow.

    Advice to Management

Consider all factors when offering online courses including students at a distance in this global marketplace.

    Pros

Everyone is friendly, it allows you to do what you want and live out your dreams. It's laid back yet strict at the same time meaning you have lots of fun but everything is professional.

    Cons

Space fills up quickly on the radio so you need to get in your time slot right away or you'll be doing your show early or late at night.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the good work
