I worked at Bullivant Houser Bailey full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great place to get experience in lots of different practice areas. Decent pay.

    Cons

Terrible management. As others have said, no loyalty. If a caseload ended or attorney left the firm, dumping followed, no matter that years of great work and performance reviews preceded it. Paralegal billing goals of 7 hours per day, which is unheard of in the industry. Literally impossible to do in an 8 hour day without support staff unless on full blast on a single large case. And of course, they fired all of the support staff because they didn't have billable hours.

    Advice to Management

Recognize that the best way to get employees willing to walk through fire for you is to treat them with respect.

    Pros

Good pay and benefits, but the cons outweigh these.

    Cons

Bullivant is led by greedy shareholders who lay workers off as soon as they don't receive the hefty holiday bonus they were expecting. They follow a fast hire and fire mentality without forecasting or anticipating their long-term staffing needs. All of the staff and associates I worked with were excellent professionals that made the firm a lot of money, but got little respect or honesty in return. Wise former shareholders, associates and staff have fled this firm. It is no longer well-thought of in the legal community, but a sinking ship. Take the job if you only want to work a couple of years, but don't expect any stability or to retire there. You're loyalty will not be rewarded.

    Advice to Management

The current president of BHB, Loren Podwill, is a poor leader. He's more interested in the sound of his own voice than listening to staff or associates' concerns. If he says that there won't be any more layoffs for awhile, one is surely around the corner. You'll get lots of empty promises, if not outright lies, from him about the health and stability of the firm. He really has to go.

    Pros

Great company; great benefits. Was able to have flexibility with regard to hours.

    Cons

Tons of work. Billable hours requirement may be unrealistic if you are also required to do administrative work.
