Relatively good working environment, but career can become stagnant and leadership subjective

      Pros

cool people, depending on the team flexibility in work-life balance, decent pay

      Cons

Insider desperately needs better career development, depending on the team far less flexibility in work-life balance, raises and promotions can feel completely arbitrary (hard to negotiate a raise, instead you'll just see the annual bump)

Tread carefully - this is a place that works well for some but not others

      Pros

Great work/ life balance, unlimited PTO, and generally nice folks

      Cons

Nothing about the product or company is cutting-edge. The product here is a frankenstein of a bunch of third-party tools which makes it painful for both the engineers and editors who are treated as obvious disposable employees. In addition, much of the experiences on the site are just lazy copies of what bigger competitors are doing. Office politics is also a major issue and many teams here are run by middle-managers who have no experience or are hired right out of undergrad and can't communicate very will with others. Compensation is average.

      Great experience overall at Insider

      Pros

Great company culture—team/bonding events, career development workshops, DEI workshops, check-ins with managers to discuss personal goals Lots of room within the company to move up, get raises, and gain experience–and managers will work with you so that you are in a position you’re interested in and working towards goals that are good for both you AND the company Good work/life balance—very rarely did I need to do overtime Great coworkers

      Cons

Very few cons... Salary could be higher because NY is expensive to live in Wasn’t clear until almost the end whether I’d get a full time position after the fellowship even though I performed well (this may be due to Covid, though)

      Feigns Inclusion

Oct 29, 2020 - Producer in New York, NY

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Depending on what team you are on, the work-life balance is good.

      Cons

HR and upper management pretend to care about diversity and inclusion by hosting events for show and sending encouraging emails. In the background, they often promote white, cis men who have little to no qualifications, while holding down POCs in the same role for extended periods of time. At the same time, HR will not listen to BIPOCs or LGBTQIA+ individuals when we express our needs. Several employees dropped out of culture groups in protest after needs continued to be ignored , and in response the company chose to exclude us from opportunities that could further our careers instead of actually listening.

      Life as an Intern

Sep 12, 2018 - Intern - Hourly in New York, NY
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

-The company is growing and investing in its teams. It wants to expand to other cities and open new bureaus. They want to do more original reporting and journalism, and they are armed with the money to do so. They are hiring. -The office is nice and located in a cool spot in NYC. -Interns can only work 40 hours/week so good work/life balance. -The company emphasizes a strong culture in which it's about more than just the job and wants people to attend events and get to know co-workers on a personal level. -Free snacks, but sometimes the snack people slack off and forget to replenish stuff.

      Cons

-Salary is crap. No benefits. -Not all interns are hired. -The company's commitment to journalism is inconsistent. Not a lot of original reporting, too much aggregation. -It's like "lipstick on a pig": Trying to make it like they are doing reporting when they aren't. Not as many exclusives or scoops as they advertise. -People will not go out of their way to make you feel welcome and part of the team. A lot of people will not socialize or look to develop a relationship because they don't care. -A vicious cycle/rotating door of interns: out goes one, in comes the other. People won't establish relationships with you because they know you'll be gone. -You just do all the grunt work and assignments that no one else wants. No original reporting opportunities, you're just picking up all the scraps. -Inconsistent in terms of workflow of days. Some days they'll have you drowning in work, others you'll do nothing. -You'll feel invisible a lot and no one will know the difference if you're there or not. -Slideshows are the purest form of clickbait. -An aggregation farm: they will use you to milk as much content out of you as they can until they legally cannot. Once they hit the point where they would have to pay you full-time and give you benefits, they'll cut you loose. -Clickbait for days. Not journalism. Willing to do anything for the clicks to make that money -Need to hit a monthly quota for clicks. Quantity over quality. -Not journalism.
