I have been working at By Light Professional IT Services full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Do what they promise, fair salary and good leadership. Growing exponentially but still very good with individual attention of workers.

    Cons

Benefits aren't the greatest, especially the 401k as there is no match yet.

    Advice to Management

Please improve 401k and include a match. This will make a great difference.

I worked at By Light Professional IT Services full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I worked with By Light for over four years. Of the three contracting agencies for which I worked, in my eight years (and change) contracted to the VA, I really enjoyed By Light the best. As my employee number was in the very low 200s, I was a rather early joiner of the company. They brought me in, gave me great benefits, and held by me well while my wife was very ill. The local management (PMs, PrgMs, and VPs) are amazing individuals who all know the employees who work under them. If it hadn't been a transition year in which I did not receive a contract, I would have happily stayed through the future.

    Cons

They were a Service Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business until the VA made them a Large Business by getting them many contracts. Now as no longer a small business, they had a harder time getting the prime contract slot. This makes for difficulty in securing a higher value contract for a senior technical writer. Hence my layoff. The only personnel issue I ever had was with a technical lead who became quite the micro-manager and made life difficult for a while. Otherwise, the company is great.

    Advice to Management

When someone is a senior employee, try to find ways to move them laterally so they can continue to be an asset to the company.

I worked at By Light Professional IT Services full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good communication from mid-management. Better than average benefits. Still has small-company feel as they grow.

    Cons

Like all government contract work, positions can be lost with a contract. Odd HR policies - very strict on time keeping, no PTO time carries over year to year.

    Pros

    No micro-management hanging over you.

    Cons

No communication with the company, contracts end without notice. SCA Contract with low wages requiring a Health/Welfare Benefit Allowance and Quarterly Bonuses to make up for low contract wages.

    Advice to Management

Communicate with your workers and don't leave them out in the cold. Remember you're employees are your biggest asset.

    Pros

Some of my co-workers were fun to be around. I can say nothing positive about the company.

    Cons

Raises were not automatic. After complaining enough I got one (2.5%) one year.

    Pros

Great people to work with. Usually reasonable.

    Cons

Contract position - meaning that hired to handle a job that is a contract for ByLight. Unfortunately, contracts come to an end and so does the position. However, BYLight looks to see if one can be moved to another position in another contract job.

    Pros

None. Use you free time to find a new job.

    Cons

Being in IT we have to stay sharp, top of our game or get left behind. IMHO, By Light is akin to pilot fish, management thinks it is pilots and yes they are always looking down on the workers. The real bosses are the contractors By Light is subbing for. Management is not equipped intellectually to work as civilians. As an employee of By Light, for the first time in my 15 yr career I watched TV during the day. It was nauseating. You can only self-study for so long; what’s more By Light would not pay for training but they will promise you lots of paid training during the interview process. So you have to train yourself using the free material out there. Most management already has a pension the US Govt and treat workers like pee-ons. Management will have 6 people who don’t know each other working on the same thing, so the manager can gather information from employee 1 and question employee 6, then after getting details from two people, hold meeting with 3 others and DB pretends to know what he is talking about.

    Advice to Management

Cash Out. Live off the fat pensions provided by the US tax payer. You did earn em.
