    Pros

    With our parent company, Systemax Inc, the opportunities are endless!

    Cons

    Not a lot of access to work from home. I would like the opportunity to work from home beyond our typical work hours.

    Advice to Management

    Continue to take chances on those with only an associate degree. There are a lot of people that have the drive but have not had the opportunity to go to college.

    Pros

    Great people who are passionate about what they do and go the extra mile for their customers

    Cons

    Losing marketshare and decreasing revenue year over year. They were bought out by Global Industrial this year (2015)

    Advice to Management

    Now that they were bought out by Global Industrial there isn't much to say. The writing was on the wall when I left (2013) that they were going downhill.

    I worked at C&H Distributors full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Great people in this company. There was a lot of talent and many outstanding ideas were presented during my time here.

    Cons

    Most of those outstanding ideas were ignored. This company suffered from extremely poor decision-making by its executive and that not only crushed morale but eventually led to this 80+ year old company being bought out by a competitor. The other major flaw is that there doesn't seem to be any semblance of an opportunity for growth here. If you're hired into an entry level position you'll retire in that position.

    Advice to Management

    Start listening to others. It is not okay to shoot down all new ideas if you aren't suggesting any of your own. Every one in this company lost faith in the management team and towards the end we were all sitting back just watching the ship sink while they did nothing.

    Pros

    C&H was bought by Global Industrial. It was a good place to work back in the day.

    Cons

    Global did some house cleaning. They seem to make rather abrupt personnel changes.

    Do you ever strive to be a company that people want to work for?

    Pros

    Pay is average or even a little above average for non-union job. Benefits are average for a non-union job. Health insurance is better value than average for non-union job. Laid off employees have been getting severance pay.

    Cons

    The management has always been more interested in consolidating and keeping power than in helping the company succeed or serving the customer. And who got promoted? Suckups and like-minded individuals. Quality workers either left or learned to shut up and not care. It became so obvious that the company was in trouble that the company president was fired and a new one was brought in from outside. He cleaned house somewhat a year later and about six or seven executive staff were let go, but the damage was already done: the incompetence of the upper echelon helped make the recession ten times worse and a lot of employees were laid off. And most of the managers that are still around haven't changed: the "teacher's pets" get away with anything and everything, the workers that aren't liked by the boss get subtly harassed. They still are more interested in looking good to their immediate superior than to the customer.

    Advice to Management

    If a company is in such bad shape that they fire the president and hire a replacement from the outside, talk to the employees about what's wrong. It's not a sign of weakness or indecision, it's an acknowledgement that they've seen the real problems and might have solutions. Just touring the facility and saying hi is not talking with them. Send out confidential questionaires, do interviews in private, something to get the inside scoop so that employees can talk freely without fear of revenge by management.

    Work life balance and great coworkers

    They will never hire from within.

    Advice to Management

    Invest in your employees and not in the outside consulting firm to do what your managers should be doing in the first place.

    Co Workers are great to work with. Immediately had a sense we were in it together and not competing for sales

    Cons

    After Global purchased C&H, immediately things went downhill. Micro managing became a way of life and it looks like it's picking up speed. favoritism is rampant. Ok job if nothing else, otherwise, if you have a choice, pick somewhere else to work

    Pros

    Hmmm...parklike location convenient to freeway and shopping.

    Cons

    When I first started at C&H, it was a family run business that embraced solid values and loyalty to its employees and customers. It was then purchased by a German company who valued customer relationships but treated employees as numbers on a spreadsheet. C&H has now negatively transitioned further to value only the bottom line since being purchased by Global Industrial.

    Advice to Management

    This office desperately needs leadership. Employees feel duped and left in the dark. Communication needs to improve. Goals need to be shared. Create a sense of inclusion.
