I have been working at CA Technologies full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The company provides above market average salary, great benefits, plenty of paid vacation days, great work/life balance and option to work from home on days requested.

    Cons

The upper management of the company lacks stability and long term objective causing plenty of disappointment among employees. Some times there's huge communication gap between the management and the dev teams.

    Advice to Management

Please know that your action has consequences and most of the time it's felt by the employees who get blind sided.

    Pros

Agile development environment, decent benefits plan options if willing to pay for more comprehensive plan. 5 weeks time off after 10 years of service.

    Cons

Politics driven, promotion opportunities in technical writing limited, particularly after technical writing department flattened out leadership structure and made leadership roles a 'behavior' but no longer part of job title.
Constant pressure to get ahead of peers to keep off layoff lists, layoffs constant threat, protect from within culture for more senior employees versus rewarding performers.
Raises minimal if you work your way up through company rather than come in from outside.

    Advice to Management

Reward employees, minimize constant layoff risk and inherent peer competitiveness to be two steps ahead of cube neighbor. Reduce manager to employee ratio. Make performance management more manageable and meaningful. Give raises! Allow flexible work location for globally involved employees.

I have been working at CA Technologies full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

This is a very exciting and rewarding company to work for. Considering how long CA Technologies has been around, you have many opportunities to work with all kinds of products and technologies, ranging from the new up-and-coming JVM/JavaScript tech stacks all the way to core legacy software that's been running some of the biggest enterprises out there.

The teams are full of bright people who are willing to work with you and mentor you. Some teams are fairly fast-paced where innovative people will thrive, and others work at a different angle which would suit people more interested in maintaining software and working directly with customers. Either way, you can be sure that you will be challenged to do your best, and be recognized for your successes as well.

The company has a pretty good compensation system for acknowledging people who perform. Whether it be technical or process-related, managers do a good job of identifying those who really take their work seriously, and offer fantastic career advice.

    Cons

There is too much turbulence and uncertainty in the upper levels of management. It seems like new leaders are brought in every few months, and everyone tries to throw in their own two cents. This causes a lot of churn since every change to upper management usually means a disruption in the lower levels of the company. It's understandable that a big company needs to evolve to survive in the market, but too much change has a negative effect on your employees.

Layoffs and cuts are all too common. Depending on what area of the company you are assigned to, or if you are not working on the "latest thing", then your chances of being caught up in the next round of layoffs seemingly increase. This has a big impact on the culture, where people are weary of when the next big cut is coming. The very top talent that the company wishes to acquire and retain ends up voluntarily leaving as a result.

    Advice to Management

Find a plan and stick to it. Solid innovation can only happen when your employees are happy and see value in the direction that you are taking the company in.

I worked at CA Technologies full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Benefits plan, 401K and company match, charitable donations matching, volunteer opportunities, paid time off, leave policy. Good coffee.

    Cons

Constant larger and smaller layoffs, much departmental and company-wide politics in older employees protecting their own roles and setting up those who are threats to take their positions, red tape to get anything done. Not honest about business plans for software plans to employees.

    Advice to Management

Be honest and value your employees, they are your real intellectual property and value. Constant layoffs create culture of distrust between management and individual contributors, setting up performing employees to minimize management's risk of losing their own role in the next layoff, and uncooperative work environment where employees feel they have to protect their own work and work role rather than share knowledge.
